External script editor resets to "open by file extension" every time I open unity

Hello, I got another question. after this I will hopefully never have to ask about any problem again…

When I open unity after closing the editor I need to go to preferences and change the external script editor. I found one other post with the same problem: External Script Editor resetting to default on restart

The fixes that worked for some people didn’t work for me. The only one I didn’t try was the administrator mode because I can’t find a mode like that on mint.

I can remember it wasn’t always like this (only after a day of use?) I hope someone can help me and the people in the other post.
