extreme newb - importing keyframed maya mesh

ok, this is painfully stupid…

made a very simple keyframed animation in maya, but if i move the mesh somewhere in the scene in unity it jumps to the origin every time i try to play (or scrub the animation timeline). of course i saved it in maya centered at the origin.

is there something obvious i’m missing here? i don’t really have to position it (relatively) in maya first, do i?

Just create an empty game object. Put the animated game object into it. Then move the empty game object instead of the animated object.
