Extremely sick of non-backwards compatible Unity addons from a @$$ed out 3.5.x user

I got the short end of the stick. I bought my 3.5.7 license about 1-2 months before the release of 4.0. Yeah, I was pretty much infuriated. I had JUST paid $1500… Just to see it get completely outdated unless I pay ANOTHER $1500 for upgrade costs.

So yeah, I’m pretty much screwed by almost all cutting edge plugins for Unity, because they are all 4.0+ only.

Does Unity Technologies believe ANYONE who purchased Unity pre-4.0 are happy right now? Do you think they are cherishing all the cool new features and all these awesome new addons?

Why exactly are all new addons 4.x only? What am I, the person who paid REAL MONEY for this license, but somehow almost useless cuz I can’t use any addons… all because I was unlucky because I purchaed it 1-2 months too early.

And to top it off, I put in about a year of thinking into it before I decided to pay for the license, thinking of the long term.

I’m hoping some important people at Unity Technologies read this…

Trust me, you WON’T realize how useless Unity feels, unless you purchased a 3.5.x license firsthand.

It might not hurt to contact some of the asset developers. There’s a very good chance that many of the assets would work in 3.5+ without any issue, but the compatibility version is set by whatever version of the editor the publishers are using to submit the Asset. For instance, my Json .Net asset works fine in Unity 3.5 and above… but if I were to publish it to the Asset Store with version 4.2.2 of the editor… no one using a version lower than 4.2.2 would be able to download and install the asset because it would list that version as the minimum requirement.

Upgrade costs are $750, not $1500. You can just download 4.2 and use that to import the 4.x plugins, then transfer those to your 3.x project (unless they use 4.x-specific features).

Unity had made it pretty clear that 4.0 was coming out, and as part of that announcement also offered “Early Access to 4, plus full upgrade to 4” for any purchase made for around 6 months prior to its release. Check and see if you have a Unity 4 license showing up in your Unity License screen in your account settings, or if your 3 key works with 4. I bought mine after 4 came out, but my bro-in-law bought 3.5 and got the free upgrade to 4.
