When extruding an edge, which is not world axis aligned then the extrude direction is fine but the gizmo allows manipulation only on the world axis. Is there a way to make the gizmo work on the local axis?

You can change the orientation of the gizmo by toggling the “Orientation” menu item. Orientation | Package Manager UI website
Setting orientation to Normal provided me the functionality I required. Initially I tried to change the Unity’s own tool handle between World and Local but this did not help.
