Facing Some Issues with i7 Laptops and Unity Editor. Any Advice?

Hello everyone,

I’m encountering some issues with the Unity Editor on my i7 laptop and was wondering if anyone else has experienced similar problems or has any advice.

Details:

  • Laptop Specs: Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Windows 11.
  • Unity Product: Unity Editor (2023.2.20f1).

Problems Encountered:

  1. Performance Lag: The Unity Editor runs slowly, particularly when working with complex scenes or multiple assets.
  2. High CPU Usage: I’ve noticed significant CPU spikes when using the editor, leading to increased fan noise and heat.
  3. Frequent Crashes: The editor sometimes crashes during builds or when switching between scenes.

What I’ve Tried So Far:

  • Updated Unity Editor to the latest version.
  • Checked and adjusted the editor settings for better performance.
  • Verified that all graphics drivers and Windows updates are current.

Despite these efforts, the issues remain. Has anyone else faced similar problems with Unity Editor on an i7 laptop? Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

That’s hard to answer to because “slowly” and “complex” are relative and subjective.

Also not concrete enough. What is high? Depends on the above and possibly even expectations.

2023.2 is unsupported and you’re almost on the latest patch release already.
You may want to upgrade to the current Unity 6 preview if only to check how that behaves.

For all we know this could be a Laptop one can buy for less than $1,000. The i7 exists in many versions and they can be severely downgraded compared to a Desktop i7. The SSD may also be cheap-grade, hampered by slow write speeds (common in such systems).

If you want to edit “complex” scenes my thought is that you’ll need at least a Laptop in the $2,000 range to work with that comfortably, and it’ll still be considerably slower compared to a Desktop system of the same price range.

Make sure you exclude the project folder from Antivirus “live” scans. On a system like that, Antivirus can be a huge burden and pain.
