Fan Generated Content

I’ve been on a kick today about fan created content.

I remembering how Megaman used to hold design contests for new bosses.

And I see that communities like Smite and Left 4 Dead are constantly creating fan concept art.

And of course there’s mods. I actually hate mods, but anyway.

Over the years I’ve had a LOT of ideas for lots of different things and I’ve always thought that games could benefit their social scene if they could better let fans be part of the creative process.

For example, I thought it would be a brilliant idea if games like Elder Scrolls could connect to a server and upload fan fiction books into the game and offer them for sale outside the game. Or maybe fan art could be uploaded to paintings. Or maybe turn screen shots into paintings. Or maybe have working instruments and allow bards to learn the songs. Or hell, maybe even tools to make dungeons and quests!

Or with a game like Street Fighter, why not have character creation contests. Maybe include a character creation tool in game that players can fiddle with and then Capcom could pick the best entries and make them into official characters.

Maybe mobas could pick up fan art and turn it into content.

What do you all think?

Well its a dream that people care enough about your game they’d make fan content for it.

Hell, I think I should reel it in and dream about finishing a game.

Those could be fun things, if you want to do those type of things with your ip, you should totally go for it. There are all kinds of direction you can take it. And if others feel the same about thier own ip, they should give it a shot as well. And hopefully share what experiences they had that worked and didn’t work.

And by the same token, if other ip owners feel that isn’t a route the are interested in exploring or opening up, that is fine as well. Because, as content creators, we respect other creator’s creative freedom to chose the direction of thier work, just as we expect them to respect ours.
