Fans of FPS Games on iPhone?

How many people here are Fans of FPS Games on iPhone or maybe other Mobile Devices?

I go to the App Store maybe once every other week to see what new FPS Games have been published, try those that are Free and buy those that are under $2. I find them all to have horrible controls, and the whole FPS Gameplay Experience is just well… Not Fun! For me at least… and I keep seeing more and more FPS Games being pushed out for iPhone and/or mobile devices…

is it just me or is there no way to properly create the controls on the iPhone Mobile Platform to Improve FPS Gameplay Experience?

also does anyone know the actual statistics of how many people are buying FPS Games on Mobile Devices and actually Enjoying these FPS Games?

The Last Major FPS Game I tried was Shadowgun: DeadZone (made with Unity), it seems like a popular successful one, but I was not happy about the controls still and gameplay experience still…

any thoughts…

I like the work Gameloft has done with Modern Combat. The controls are the best I have tried for an FPS and graphics are magnificent. Not much of a multiplayer guy here but I hear it’s hands-down the best multiplayer fps experience in mobiles.

As for Shadowgun… was that not a Third Person Shooter?

Your right! but I think today some try to promote Third Person Shooters as FPS Games as well… but of coarse there is a difference…

since we are on the subject… how about Third Person Shooters as well? I find them equally horrible lol! there is something about the moving and aiming that throws me off… like i found somes games have aiming as one control, then once you have your crosshair on the target you need to go back and press the shoot button quickly ?? which the heck?

then if you have the other control where you can aim, place crossair on target, then press alittle harder down on the touchscreen to start shooting…

I find that my fingers get in the way on the display and block my view of my target, or other targets… then there is the left controller for moving around which i find also sometimes blocks my view and display area…

having a joystick separate from the screen really makes a hell of a difference lol!

Sure ill play a FPS on my iconia tablet or iTouch but I for some reason get quite sick to my stomach after a few minutes. I think it has something to do with the frames per second or FOV. I prefer puzzle games for my mobile devices.

Think the biggest difference is that player expect special cover mechanics out of a third person shooter, and therefore controllers should be even more robust to accommodate them. On that side, Toucharcade gave Epoch for iOS a great review. I have not tried it, though.

I just launched Modern Combat 2 to test this, I am not sure how the last two games handle it but it has one big shooting button, one move button and the entire surface area outside either can be used to aim. However, I can always just press “Shoot” and still move my finger to aim. So yea, you may need a quick release after aiming to then tap for shooting, but you don’t NEED to stop shooting to aim, only if you want to make your first shot count in an initial stealth assault.

A decent assist feature that does not feel like it’s doing the entire job for you may be a requirement for things to feel smooth.

That, sadly, is true with almost all mobile games. It gets WAY better with the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch G5, thanks to the wider screen. I am not extremely fond of gaming in Android yet, but it is also way nicer in a larger device like a Samsung Galaxy Player or heck, a Galaxy Note.

I have also found that 7" tablets make the best gaming devices, small enough to be very portable, large enough that your fingers never get in the way, and light enough to not ever cause balance issues against your wrist even if you hold them by the lower corners alone. The size of the original iPad, for me, make this a bit harder without inclining it against something, plus it’s not very portable.

Well, sure. It kills portability, though :stuck_out_tongue: Also, where is the fun on just adding gamepads? Part of the fun of being a developer is to find interesting solutions for interesting problems, and touch controls are one of those fun problems to tackle

It’s come to my attention that maybe i just SUCK at iPhone FPS/Third Person Shooters LOL!!

I think I prefer playing Top Down Shooter / RTS / RPG / Action Games on iPhone or Mobile Devices. The Controls always seem to work just fine for these kinds of games.

I’m working on a FP-RPG for Android which has three options for ranged attacks/spells: standard FPS style where you push the button and it shoots; a RPG assist where you press the button and it only fires (one attack) when an enemy is in the cross-hairs; and finally one that has a toggle switch that always fires when an enemy is in the cross-hairs when the toggle is active.

make it for iPhone and ill it a try! lol… maybe you have the cure to my “i suck at FPS Games on iPhone” disease because of bad controllers (so i think lol)
