I really wonder when they’ll release werkzeug3…
Yeah, this is The Shit (in a good sense of the word). It impressed me about as much as fr-08 did six years ago.
For downloadable content it would rock so much if unity would offer some generative engines (textures, modelling, sound, animation) and it would spare you all the art pipeline…snief…177kb…dreaming
Chaos already was technically brilliant with his Sanity work on the Amiga but in contrast to that with Farbrausch they now also have art and style. The camera is so damn slick.
Wow! I tried a procedural “handheld camera” effect but couldn’t get it any realm close to that good. Must try that again!
Got nothing on the impromptu 3 hour Demo minicontest, though.
(I’m kidding)
Does anyone know if there exists a project (maybe research) which tries to analyze music in digital form (a wav file outputted from a synth for instance) and then tries to rebuild it completely on a mathematical basis in that form that it ouputs the instructions for feeding a softsynth like in werkzeug?
Wow! Bovine Aren’t Good Insulators really!
…I’m thinking that both this and most of taumel’s stuff should be added to pouet.net
My thinking is that the closest things to that (analyze music to express it in a compressed mathematical form) are called MP3 or Ogg Vorbis. Getting further would be really hard - i.e. when you have just a single sound wave, and you don’t even know what “virtual instruments” were used to do that, how would you get the instruments back?
@Jon
What kind of a connection is this? I’m downloading below 10kB/s…? :O)

Thanks that’s nice of you but i don’t think that a lot of the stuff qualifies. But hey for short tryouts some are okayish… ;O)
I really would like to show off my trackloaded realtime fractal free flyover landscape or some stuff i did with really fast linedraws on the amiga but it’s all stored on a syquest where i don’t have a drive anymore…sigh
My thinking is…

Yeah i’m aware that this isn’t an easy task but it would be a revolution due to that you could create tiny files and beeing free to use the instrument you want. My stomach tells me it’s hard but doable. Your ears and mind can do the same.
A fast practical alternative could be using a physical based synthesizer and having somekind of standard for this one.
Really impressive stuff. Amazing that they can do all of that with compression and algorithms.
I’d like to see them make an actual game with it though. I know they did an FPS test game one time but it didn’t really play all that well and was pretty far from fun.
And one advice: If you have the time/connection you should go for the avi and not waste your time on the youTube video as you see so much more in the avi - all the nice details!
That is really really cool. I love the flowing highway.
Wow, that was super neat…
“go for the avi”
or QuickTime – and then you can have detail AND run properly cross-platform.
I don’t remember if they alread had the mp4 whilst i watched it and i also had no problems watching the avi with quicktime on my mac. Remember avi is a container not a codec!
Hey, who watches demos in .avi ? Get the real thing and save bandwidth as well, it’s only 177 kilobytes! (of course, that requires a beefy machine… and windows)
Because a) it’s win only (oh god it’s me writing this… ;O) and b) it requires some nice hardware (and i also got some crashes reported).
Watching the avi is just the easy way into this…

Just in case anyone isn’t aware of them.

Flip4Mac is very nice but (a) not everyone has it, and (b) it only covers a subset of AVI codecs.
AVI is a horrible mess – in large part because the standard codecs suck so everyone goes off and uses custom Windows-only codecs.
Whats the 3D quality like running XP under bootcamp? I guess DirectX API has native access to the Macs vid card right?
Anyone know when Parallels will support 3D calls? The holy grail of virtualization hehe
(I think I mentioned this in another post)
Cheers
Shaun
I once installed the windows media player on my mac and since then everything i wanted to see worked…
I’m much more upset by Apple’s DVD-Player. What’s a good alternative if you just want a scrollbar were you can choose the position in the DVD-movie by dragging a slider?
I just discovered that problem yesterday aswell… no scrubber…
Was also curious, for the demo, how do they do the real-time mesh destruction? esp for the buildings - it looks great. Im guessing they select a certain number of vertexes, detach them as an object and then the rest is up to physics. Not sure how the texturing would work tho. too smart for me
