far clip plane and performance

I have few questions about how the far clip plane affects drawing performance.

In my example I have a circle that has 24 objects parented around it. I rotate the circle so the objects rotate in and then out of the cameras view. I have the far clip plane set to that only 3 to 5 objects in the circle are visible at a time.

My questions are

  1. Do the objects when outside the camera clip plane, have an affect on the performance in any way. (think iPhone).

  2. Do I need to still count the polys of all objects in the scene or just the ones rendered by the camera at any given time.

  3. Do I need to use any other techniques to make sure objects off camera do not affect the gameplay in this case?.. like Occlusion Culling?

Thanks

  1. Yes, depending on what scripts they are running, if they are part of the physics simulation, etc.

  2. Just the ones rendered.

  3. That depends on what you’re doing. You could use OnBecameInvisible to make objects stop running Update functions, for example, if they have any.
