As I am currently working on some game design research I came to an interesting question. What’s your favorite FPS game and why? All opinions would be greatly appreciated!
I think my personal favorite FPS is Timesplitters 2 on the Gamecube. Creativity packed into every level and character design. Direct objective based gameplay and more guns than you could have dreamed of for its time. Simple interface, excellent music, fantastic multiplayer.
From a technical standpoint, its simplistic inventory system and easy to use controls made it one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in an FPS to date. The controls made everything smooth and easy, from level navigation and weapon control/swapping. Auto weapon/ammo/item pickups made the game even easier to handle than most games today. The only downside to the game I can think of is that you cannot jump. However, the way the game was designed allows you to be content without it.
Probably everything made by Valve. If I had to say one in particular, I’d choose Team Fortress 2 because of the fun factor. Half Life for the atmosphere.
For those who remember.
I think “Marathon”, for it’s time, was great.
Very good mood and storyline.
Thats one game I really would like to see a modern remake of.
They didn’t do anything revolutionary. But instead, they took existing technology and gameplay mechanics and did it very well.
The overall narrative, while not original, was done well.
Cortana as a sidekick in your head was awesome. It was a great way of giving the player necessary information in the context of the game. Voice acting was also superb.
The way they paced the game was also done well. Small intense battles with periods of story and exploration in between. The pace changed often, which kept the player from getting bored.
For multiplayer, the gameplay balance was perfect. It’s no surprise that even after all these years and numerous iterations, people are still playing Halo (3) online in big numbers.
Indeed, I think Halo 1 is the best FPS ever (I hate the sequels). However, it’s not my favorite, as it takes itself seriously, and while that’s fine, it doesn’t have the charm of DOOM.
