FBX for Unity

FBX imports into Unity often go awry. However, Adobe’s Mixamo exports FBX files in a “FBX for Unity” file format that keeps FBX files used in Unity working as expected.

Is there a Blender or Maya or Daz3d or Houdini FBX export setting that would mimic Mixamo’s, so the FBXes I export from 3rd-party programs will import properly into Unity?

What specifically is the problem? I use blender and Maya with no problems. (As do many other folks). Can you better explain the problem you are having?

Yeah, I also use a variety of FBX files from a variety of sources and I haven’t really had a problem with Unity’s importer.

So what’s wrong?

When I import from Blender, not all the sides import – see attachments. This happens with fbx and obj. When I import from Daz3D, everything is solid / 4-sided – but instead of all the shapes remaining in a half circle – the half circle comes unglued and the individual shapes are scattered all over the Unity stage. I have to then manually re-position everything.

If I could fix this blender facing thing I’ve got going on … that would save me some time.

You need to fix your normals, they are facing the wrong direction.

Done! Thank you!

In blender, it won’t by default show that your normals are flipped. Often modifiers will give you unexpected normals. I usually switch the display to textured solid before exporting. That usually will show any problems I have.
