I was in the middle of writing a tutorial to import and set up OBJ model sin Unity 3D for my 3D Model World (http://3dmodelworld.com) royalty free 3D models. While in the middle of writing the tutorial I decided to export one to FBX and import it into Unity. After importing the model and copying the textures into the assest, it only took 2 clicks to have it ready to go into Unity.
Therefore in the next several days we will make available .FBX formats in addition to OBJ and 3DS format files and include PSD textures as well for them.
I do have a quick question, if I build unity packages as well I take it I need to include the 3D model and textures with the package or are they already in the package when exported?
Everything you select for package creation will be included in the package.
But please make sure to do this with unity-3.5.x because a lot of people are still using the 3.5.x version of unity =)
You’ll save yourself a lot of hassle not making packages to export, as they can be version specific, which can sometimes limit their lifespan, you’d need to make new packages as new versions were released, where as if you have your files in fbx format you wont run into this issue.
Sounds good. We are about to start packaging and uploading FBX versions. I hope to have all the current models updated to include FBX downloads in the next 5-7 days.
I just uploaded the FBX format that includes both JPG and Photoshop PSD textures for the Ritual Dagger on 3D Model World. It is a free download, so ya’ll can see how our 3D models work for you. I have also begun uploading FBX formats of other models there and will continue until all of the models available include the FBX version.
