FF 50 is CLOSED. Next Feedback Friday opens on Feb 17th. Game on!
Want design feedback for your new game? Then you’ve found the right thread! Post here to get precious player feedback. Discuss until we lock the thread to start the two week break.
How To Ask For Feedback?
Show - Pics, videos, or best of all, a playable game!
Be Concise - Who’s got time for Wall 'O Text? Less is more
How To Give Feedback?
Be Positive - Finding redeeming qualities in the worst of games, is in itself a game
Focus On The Design - Not the designer
Be Specific - “Your game sucks!” is for nubs
What To Show?
Minimally Viable Product (MVP) - Core game play >>> everything else
Just released the first demo of my FPS game - Fallen Time, with the first 2 level available (The game menu is a placeholder, though.)
Most of core features are finished, with control, graphic option panels, and I want to ask these following questions:
Is the difficulty moderate? For the first 2 level? (I want to make this game challenging, harder then most of modern FPS game, but not too hard, likes the first Far Cry level.)
Is the control good? How does the game feel while playing? Is movement speed decent?
Is level design clear or confusing? like you don’t know where to go since this game doesn’t hold your hands.\
How do you think of the option panel? Is that good enough?
Basically your standard FPS control, plus:
G for throw Grenade
F for interact (open door/switch etc)
T for throw distract rock
C for crouch
Z for using medkit
Esc for pause
Q/E for switch prev/next weapon
1~6, F1~F5 for switch weapons
Screen Shots : (The later 3 images aren’t in the demo, they are in later levels)
(Videos can be found at my youtube channel, note that I’ve decreased the speed and added a “run” button now since this game was too easy at the original speed.)
Okay, disclaimer: I’m barely an FPS player at all, and didn’t get through the first level. But… that was quite unpleasant.
First, the options: you’ve forgotten mouse sensitivity.
The wobbling of the weapon models is distracting and unhelpful. At one point the pistol overlapped the crosshair.
For the style of gameplay that you’re going for, and the player’s speed, the movement is too slippery.
The level design is really undermined by the enemy AI: first, they start out completely immobile and silent, which is by itself inelegant, but I walked into the town-like place and at first got lost because I didn’t see any enemies, and then died because while wandering around aimlessly I managed to aggro everyone.
I don’t know what the chime is supposed to do. I think it’s when the enemies notice you. But they really could report that more organically (and the dogs in fact do). It also could help to know who’s attacking you.
Thanks! The mouse sensitivity.and weapon wobbling one definitely make sense
But how actually the level design confusing? I understand you don’t play FPSes but the first level is quite linear (compare to other old classics like Doom) honestly, and the detect meter can warn the player when you are in someone’s sight.
And can you be more specific to the “slippery movement”? Because I didn’t really find that a problem when I test play.
I’ve replayed it, and maybe it’s not the movement itself, but the mouse sensitivity, and the way you jump. So the movement is slippery, but only in specific circumstances. The way you slide off of things you try to jump on is really weird. Otherwise I think it’s just the mouse sensitivity that made me feel sluggish.
As far as the linear level, yes, the first part is linear. But in the town part what happens is, you wander in, where are the enemies? Suddenly you hear a couple pings and out of nowhere you get chased by an annoying dog. Also, your encounter with an enemy is in two fashions - you either see it in the distance completely immobile, or there’s no sign of it at all before it notices you, which makes it seem that it simply spawned behind you.
One more thing I noticed: the gun you start with, for the number of shots you get between reloads and its accuracy, seems more suited for slow, low-health enemies. But instead you get fast enemies that can take a few shots right off the bat. I tried strafing and backpedaling to accommodate that, but the level isn’t suited for that, with its many obstacles and narrow streets. For the enemies you’ve got I’d usually expect to start with a shotgun, although that would seem OP for the first level.
Just some things I want to note : The pistol shoot as fast as you click, and all enemy spawn right away as level started (I mean they all behave like the way “see it in the distance completely immobile”), but , thanks again for test playing
Posted by @TheAlmightyPixel it’s a pretty tight run down on how FPS ‘should’ work. To cure the FPS mechanics you wanna turn smoothing off, if you have it on, and build a slider to customise mouse sensitivity. Not sure if you’ve done this, couldn’t play the game on a mac.
