Hi,
I can’t contact Local Sales Manager or support and need quick answer so maybe anyone here can help me
Is Unity license only for development or also for using game (ex. I had been creating game for two months, then I only share it for people to play is license for two months enough?)
And situation: I made a game for a company then sell it to them (with waive copyrights). Do they need any license? What if I buy license for me, create game then sell it to them and they only use it to play? Or they need to buy Unity Pro (1500$ - is it lifetime?).
lemme try and sum up everything i can about the licence model
unless you make 100k (gross?) per year using Unity, you are not required to use the pro licence
with the free tier, you are free to make whatever you want with the full engine capabilities and distribute the produce as you like; the only caveat is a splash screen at the beginning but at this stage for you this is not really a concern
if you gross >100k/annum or would like to remove the splash screen, then you will need a pro licence
This can either be bought once for 1.5k; this will grant you access to a Unity 5 pro license forever, but if you want to upgrade to Unity 6 when it comes out you will need a licence (believe you get a discounted upgrade)
Anything you produce with unity is yours, royalty free, to use how you chose. The customers do not need Unity or Unity Pro
You can’t just buy it for 2 months, as i believe the minimum in the subscription model is 12 months
Can someone more knowledgeable chime in to make sure everything i said is right?
This is the only thing that isn’t totally right. It depends on how they use it when it sells it to them.
If he gives them a Unity project which they then use, then they would also need Pro if he uses Pro, or if their turnover is >100K.
If he gives them an exported app (for example, he is a developer and the customer is a publisher), then they do not need Pro as they are not using Unity.
I’m very glad for your response, it really helps me.
What in situation if they use this game for employeers to play and gather statistics, they don’t sell it or earn money direct from it but overall they company income is >100K, they can use it without Unity Pro?
No. If the company, regardless of whether they monetize the game or not, is making $100,000 gross annual income they need to purchase Unity Pro licenses. One of the easiest examples of this is how universities are required to buy licenses regardless of the fact they’re just teaching Unity.
