Fighting-Adventure genre

Many fighting games tried to do it but it didn’t turn out good, example would be Soul Calibur and Tekken series, or Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, do you have an insight on how these be successfully achieved?

Something more advanced/balanced than general beat em up, yet it retains the feeling of adventure and fluidity of beat em ups.

In full 3D games I think Devil May Cry perfected it, fast paced with advanced input, short battles for smaller foes yet retains the feeling of longer duels in boss fights.

Sadly in 2D/2.5D games options are limited I can think of Castlevania series but the fights are shorts and too platforming dependent sways it from fighting, if anyone recalls Kung Fu on the NES, I think it was one of a kind.

Features should be included: (Give me some more)

  • Fights should vary, short ~ 10 seconds, long 120~200 seconds.
  • Include move sets with input friendly to direction switching.
  • Supports 2v1 or 3v1 scenarios.
  • Dodge or guard system.
  • Frame data, hit boxes, partial invincibility, like SFIV and other fighting games, some mind games with rock paper scissors options

If you ask me, the best ones were the Double Dragon and Final Fight series. Since then, I haven’t seen one I really cared for. I’ll credit the Simpsons one for being pretty decent, though.

Interesting enough, I was thinking about something like this. I’m working on a game that’s a mix of Castlevania’s 2D adventure and UMvC3 combo system with my own variations of HC, X-Factor and limited, but extensible combos.

If you want to go for it, I’m down. I have a combo system, but really I need animations for it to really look cool.
