Many fighting games tried to do it but it didn’t turn out good, example would be Soul Calibur and Tekken series, or Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, do you have an insight on how these be successfully achieved?
Something more advanced/balanced than general beat em up, yet it retains the feeling of adventure and fluidity of beat em ups.
In full 3D games I think Devil May Cry perfected it, fast paced with advanced input, short battles for smaller foes yet retains the feeling of longer duels in boss fights.
Sadly in 2D/2.5D games options are limited I can think of Castlevania series but the fights are shorts and too platforming dependent sways it from fighting, if anyone recalls Kung Fu on the NES, I think it was one of a kind.
