FilmMaker and Aspiring Game Designer, Can Unity, Run a FF style RPG?

Hi All, Want to say hi, excited to join the ranks of the GameDesigners.

this project is ambitious i know.

Im a Compositor for a Small Post/Production Studio, Whilst i love film i want to dabble in Game design.

I have a Concept for a Final Fantasy Style, RPG, Smaller scale of course, and not as heavy on the graphics, but i want to make a
strategy heavy, turn based RPG. full of Fantasy elements we all love, with a new and interesting spin on the world.

A bit about me, Im a relatively new filmmaker, been working in production for about a year now, and learning Compositing, i have recently
switched to compositing as my major Bread and butter, having just entered my first finished piece into sundance festival, im also working on a feature film shot 2years ago on the red one. Which needs some major work.
Spend most of my time learning this stuff. left my social life back in my home country england, to pursue my career here in canada.

I say this to express that im not a 14year old kid who wants to make the most awesome game ever and thinks he can just do x,y and z, and hey presto. i understand how much work is needed. anyway with that out of the way.

Im looking to talk about my ideas, create a meandering WIP where people help me flesh out the ideas, get excited, maybe even produce artwork for it themselves. but overall not begin any form of production for maybe even a year or two. (not sure if people will still care in a year) but anyway. the idea is. to slowly assemble a potential crew, discuss how we might go about designing the game etc. there is always potential for funding later on down the line. crowd sourcing etc. I want to develop a world, story, game mechanics, etc. run designs, do tests, etc. then when the timing is right pick up a full crew, paid. and design this game. i think i could be a good game designer, but time will tell. anyway, for those of you who are still with me. here are some questions.

  1. Can Unity pull of a game that is broad in scope, with intelligent AI, more of a sandbox, somewhat linear but also many areas?

  2. I have not found many turnbased games in recent years that have excited me very much, i want to bring this genre back. show its still a fantastic playing experience. anyone agree?

3, Anybody interested in fleshing out these ideas? interested in getting involved more heavily, yet casually to start.

4, What are the best examples of what unity is capable of? and what are my other options. Im a Blender enthusiast so i know about that. im looking for something much better then the BGA.

anyway, food for thought for anybody interested.

thanks for reading.

Unity is capable of quite a lot with the right people. Nothing you’ve mentioned sounds out-of-bounds for it at all. While I’m not a sage, I can’t figure Unity’s position as a solid engine, or smaller-scale games as a viable proposition, will change in the timeframe you’re talking about.

A good example of higher-fidelity graphics with it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SksljyTz8LM
Item placement/polished UI: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/152000-Can-A-Small-Team-Make-A-Big-Game-In-Unity-Yes-we-can!

  1. Yes, there are many MMORPG and RPG’s made in the Unity3D game engine
one of those are NinjaPVP, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlKy5R4SB9E&feature=channel&list=UL

  2. I am not much of a fan of many turn based gameplay but that’s ironic because I love Pokemon games.

  3. I Hate too many random boss battles, I like quick, fast pasted battles

4.For cartoony style Pirates of New Horizons at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEXrmMaPiYA&feature=channel&list=UL
For Realistic pushing limits Haunted House Concept http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt0K1IEm7Ik&feature=channel&list=UL

I seem to be the one who always throws this in.

Unity is used by Nickolodeon and Cartoon Network for MMOs so BIG things are possible. Cartoon Network is hiring from a Unity programmer right now. So BIG sandboxes are possible.

The Autumn thing IcyPeak posted is some nice work.
This is something that was done in Unity 2.6 since you’re interested in fantasy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svH6_fKULvw

I’m on the same quest as you though I have smaller projects I’m trying to flesh out and work on while the epic FF style game is in the background.

Turn based needs a comeback
