First-person-shooter game without sockets?

I went to the Unity3d meeting at Cross Campus Santa Monica this week. That was great. I’m excited about trying Unity3d and about to download it when I notice that .NET sockets are disabled in the free version.

I develop multi-player networked games. I can’t imagine what I would do with a game platform that doesn’t support sockets for client-server game communication. How will I communicate with a networked 1st-person-shooter game?
