Hi all:
I thought I’d show you my first project. There is so much to learn here from all of you.
I have a website with 800 visitors a day who are looking for information on Stress. For my first Unity project I modified the Islands Demo just a little (added ocean sound) to make a relaxing place for the visitors to roam around and leave their cares behind for a few minutes. I conceptualized it as a “Vacation to Heron Island”.
I added a splash screen Level; built an Aquarium Level (thanks to Metervara for permission to use his Red_Snappers in it) with music and dancing fish; added a seagull ride Level where the visitor is guided around the island flying on a seagull while listening to relaxing music.
This is a streaming web version. So the Splash comes up first, then the island level, then after a bit the Aquarium; then last the Seagull ride.
I’d love some feedback. Any ideas for other “relaxing” things people can do while visiting the island?
I’m a bit disappointed that people aren’t very successful downloading the plug in. Of 8600 visits so far in January to the page, 111 seem to have clicked on the link and only about 35 seem to have been successful in viewing the island.

Thanks for all the positive help given on this forum. Thanks again to all the Unity dev team as well as Metervara. Steve
I think it’s a great start! Needs a little optimization, to increase framerate on low end machines, cause your visitors aren’t probably serious gamers with great graphics cards…
Somehow I thought stress relief would come in the form of shooting… Ah well, can’t have everything now can we?
I enjoyed the seagull ride. Your Island Demo says that I can’t run with reflections, etc. for some reason, so it looks very poor compared to the demo featured on the Unity site.
I have a 2008 MacBook Pro yet was given the same bad news!
Although I must say, it was very stressful for me realizing I didn’t have a gun with which to shoot the seagulls. People look for stress relief in different ways. Being a red blooded American, I tend to want to blow stuff up to relax.
Thank you all for your comments:

I don’t know why it says that reflections and detail are not supported on this computer. It says that on my iMac with Core2Duo as well. Is that because I am using an Indie version of Unity?

About shooting the seagulls. Funny you should say that. I know just what you mean. I live in a National Forest where I am a doctor for an Indian Tribe. Out here everyone goes hunting, mainly for the meat to eat, but we frequently go shotgun target shooting for the fun of it; and our kids love FPS games. I actually started by making a version, using assets from all the other demos, where you blast the seagulls, and robots and sentry guns attack you and big stones roll down on you, and cars even attack you…I’ll see if I can get it a little farther along with that one and post it for you folks. Obviously, that version was not appropriate for the people who visit TeachHealth.com…but it was fun nonetheless.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Steve
I was just going to embark on such an adventure! Making the seagulls explode in a cloud of feathers, then respawning another one to take it’s place in an other location would be easy.
May be you could get into and out of a vehicle. Multiple vehicles! May be to save time, we could work on an importer for Rigs of Rods, so we can use their vehicles! I’ve been wanting to for a while yet…
I found the text on the screen very distracting, especially when the window is so small.
I would suggest moving what you can to the actual webpage itself:
The “Welcome” title,
telling people to turn on their speakers (typing in all caps doesn’t seem relaxing?)
movement instructions
…etc
I feel the only thing which should be on the window itself are the two buttons.
You could even change “Enter Ride” to “Take a flying tour” and reduce 2 GUI elements to one.
It’s a good relaxing island, I just think it’ll be more relaxing if people can see more of the island and not be distracted by the text.
@ Tempest:
Thanks, those are very helpful suggestions. Steve
Cool demo, it was relaxing. I love the bird’s eye view!
That’s awesome. Sounds like a really great life.
If you decouple your camera from the seagull and then add just a bit of smoothing, it would reduce the sharp/jerky changes in direction and make it easier to watch. Otherwise, I was loving the bird ride.
BTW, I also got the “no reflections” message.
I love the music during the fly through, what is it and where can I purchase it?
thanks
