First test with an online unity project

I’ve simply imported one of my max scenes into unity, included one of the prefab firstperson objects and uploaded the built project to our site. This is purely for testing, so it doesn’t look/work great.

On a colleagues machine, a unity ‘.exe’ file needed to be downloaded and installed in order to run the demo.

‘.exe’ files can flag up issues for our clients who have tightly locked down PCs in their offices. Is there a way to get Unity projects to be viewed without downloading an .exe file?

Apologies for my lack of knowledge - I am very new to this.

If i understood well, the .exe file you have downloaded is the unity player plugin for your web browser, you need to download it the only first time you run a unity web build on the machine.

Thankyou for your reply.

What I am most concerned with is firewall-type restrictions that will prevent a client from viewing a Unity ‘world’ that I create and publish.

For example, we are currently making a pitch for some work that includes virtual tours using QTVR (360 degree panoramas). We have emailed links to the client to the QTVRs, but their computer cannot play them. We tried a Flash version, but again, their PC could not play them. Finally, we tried a JAVA-based approach, and still, no success. Basically, their machines are pretty much locked down by their IT department.

This raelly doesn’t help the success of our pitch. If the client assumes commissioning QTVRs is filled with these kind of technical difficulties, they will not commission them.

This is quite an extreme case, but many of our clients are in local authorities who have no control over what their machine can and can’t play and thay have very few (if any) privileges that will allow them to install plugins.

Are there ways to allow Unity to function without installing plugins? Unlikely as that may be, what is the approach people take to reduce these concerns to the minimum?

tricky,
I don’t know much about builds and stuff, but if your clients are allowed to download something but not allowed to install things, i think the best way for you (using unity) is to make your build as a standalone executable, you can put the .exe file and the _data folder in the same folder and you’ll be able to run the .exe file without installing anything (i guess). That will allow your client to watch your demo, but is surely not a convinient way to massively publish your productions.
Or maybe someone more experimented in that domain will find a better solution for you.

PS: reading this, it sounds like we soon won’t need webplayer pluggin in Chrome browser…

a standalone build might work, because you don’t need to install anything, this isn’t the most convenient way though i guess, but if they can’t install the plugin, they can’t view it in the browser. and if they can’t even install plugins, i’m sure they can’t install chrome either, even though this would be the most comfortable solution.

imo they should just call their IT-guys and tell them to make it work. security is useless, if it prevents actually working with the computer. just my opnion though …
