First Unity Game - Looking For Feedback

Hey everybody! So I know the general rule is that first games are too basic to be interesting, but I’ve put a lot of effort into this over the past month or so and I’d appreciate some feedback. I admit it started out as an attempted clone of Space Invaders, but it soon evolved into more of a bullet-hell styled game. I was having trouble being able to judge difficulty however, some people were telling me it’s impossible even though I found it easy enough. I assume that’s just because I made it though, so I’ve implemented an Easy difficulty. I’m self-taught, so if you have any constructive feedback or ways to improve the game, it would be greatly appreciated. ^.^

You can find the game here: Personal Space: Invaders

not bad, not bad at all. Its a pretty well done first game. The particle effects with the bullets got pretty distracting tho. I do like the effort you put into the story, tutorial, and other things to makes it feel more polished than it would be otherwise.

Nice job

Thank you, it means a lot to me. If that is the case then I may fiddle with the particles’ settings a bit more before I start any other projects, I’m a bit of a perfectionist with these things :stuck_out_tongue:

It is a little hard but it is pretty good. One thing it seems as if I am hitting the ship on the first round and nothing is happening until like the third shot. If that is how you programmed it then there should be something to let me know that I have hit the ship even though I might not destroy it on the first shot and how about a a temp shield or even randomly drop something that might help you in the game after you hit or destroy a ship.

Ah, yes that is intentional, I never really thought to put in any confirmation of a hit though, whoops. That’ll be another thing I’ll look at doing soon. As for shields or pick-ups, I am not too sure how I might like to use those in the game… I’ll give it some thought though. Thanks for trying it out!

Everything worked properly and that’s what’s surely most important for a first game.

I agree that the particle effects became distracting, they seemed to pull more focus than the bullets themselves. Also when you start taking damage your ship becomes darker and seems almost invisible in it final color before you die. This might just be because the background on Kongregate is white and that’s blowing out the contrast.

Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.

I didn’t really think they were too distracting myself, but then I recently watched a friend play it at his house, and I noticed all the particle effects for the bullets were sort of stretched. They were almost twice as wide as they are when playing on my machine, so it could be appearing stretched for some of you as well… I don’t suppose anybody might know what causes/how to fix that? And my monitor’s a bit funny with colours so I might’ve just made the ship darker than I meant to, haha.

A little too difficult to play. Also, at the beginning unhide the cursor when selecting the buttons. I had no clue how to start the game until after I started to click every button on the keyboard.

The fix to make the particles last shorter is to just decrease the length of time they lives. Since every one’s computer is different it is likely your computer does not render them to the fullest, whilst my computer rendered the living daylights out of them (what I mean is, they were very distracting, its almost as if it was impossible to make it through the first boss)!

I did, however, enjoy the music. The tutorial was also pretty interesting, and simple.

Just do something different with the main menu, I almost walked away from the game because I had to click all the buttons on my keyboard.

Cheers
