Flat top hexagon grid swizzle

I’m trying work with a flat top hex grid, but it appears the way to do that is to set the grid’s swizzle to YXZ. But this makes scripting very confusing and prone to error as the cell coordinates are reversed as YX instead of the natural XY.

Is there any way to work with a flat top hex grid without having to set the swizzle to YXZ? Seems very counterintuitive.
