Fog of War

Does anybody know if any thrifty ways to create a Fog of War like in most real time strategy games?
basically units moving across a 2d plane explore an area by revealing the underside by clearing away a “fog”

I was thinking maybe a particle system with collisions , but that seemed costly with all of those collisions, plus im having a hard time getting particles to line up well without tons of vertexes which I guess is the best way to do it.

I was also thinking of having a bunch of “cells” being a grid of low poly planes with textures getting rendered and unrendered but I think that would be dumb.

anybody have any ideas? I’m a little new to 3d things so I won’t get the lingo but I pick up quick :wink: thanks
