"Foggy Hollow Knight Backgrounds"

Hello guys,
I know that TeamCherry talked a bit about how they used sprites and semi transparence to create their art but I feel like something very key to the atmosphere is still left to discuss !

The way the player lights up the background is very cool and unique, very atmospheric and bright.
I wonder how they did that.
Very often it feels like the background assets themselves are not really lighten, instead it seems like the fog layers themselves are lighten up and thus illuminates the environment.

I’ve been testing a bit with correct results but still no great.

Any insight ?

Pretty much the whole “level” is an exemple of what I’m talking about !

Cool effect. It does feel like the fog glows in response to the light as well, but I think there’s also just a point light going on too.

Have you tried interleaving layers of fog and ground? It definitely gets thicker in some places than others, and it’s a really good effect.
