I looked at the different forums and this seemed to be the best place to ask this. In the forums when you respond to a post the forums automatically subscribe you to that thread. Unfortunately it seems to default alerts to here in the forum. I have been searching through options to try and figure out how to change that default to email. Does anyone know if that is an option? And, if not, how one would go about requesting it be added as one? That and the lack of thread search (well a visible option for thread searches) are two of my biggest complaints with this forum setup. Luckily someone figured out the link structure for thread searching and shared it allowing me to bookmark it. Hoping someone knows a magic way to change alert preferences to default to email too! lol
Under your user preferences, uncheck “Automatically watch threads that you create or when you reply…”
Yeah… I saw that… Unfortunately I want to watch them but would prefer email notifications instead of (or in addition to) the alerts.
My bad. I misread (half-read) your question and assumed what you wanted.
I don’t know of any way to receive email alerts without the forum alert. I think the typical user would only want forum alerts or both, so the software may not account for those who only want email notices.
I’d be happy with both. But I’m not finding that as an option anywhere…
Click your name in the upper right portion of the forum, and then Preferences: http://con.structive.net/unityforumprefs.jpg
EDIT: Bah, replied while people posted more.
never mind… it is there now… Now to see if it works…
Thanks… Been a while since I checked and figured I would ask. Should have looked again first, I guess… rolls eyes lol
lol… I do that all the time… Usually I tend to get too wordy with my responses and half the time people respond/answer same thing while I’m thinking it out… lol
Hah! So then my answer was on the track to being correct, I just told you the opposite of what you wanted. ![]()
IS TODAY OVER YET…
It’s hit or miss. I get emails for some notifications and not for others. If I tend to get a lot of notifications, I’ll only get emails for one or two threads.
hmm that is interesting… i wonder if it has to do with when you are logged in or not. I’m going to look into that more ![]()
I only get emails from the Patch thread because it’s the only one I’ve subscribed to.
I actually think it’s by design. I post a lot sometimes, so I’ll get one or two emails but I’ll log in and have 13 replies. I’m betting the forum does it intentionally to prevent spamming / over-emailing. I do know that if you get two replies to the same post you’ll only get one email and I know that’s by design so it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s intentionally not sending all emails as well. It probably assumes that you’ve been notified about a couple of posts so you’ll check the forums.
To further clarify the behavior… it will send me an email, and I may get two or three other forum replies with no email, and then randomly it will send another email which is why I assume that it’s throttling the frequency at which it sends out the messages.
I’ve noticed it does it with regards to the alerts system as well. It won’t list every single reply, it’ll simply state that there was a reply and others may follow after it.
I’m very glad the system works how it does. Otherwise every time I loaded a page here there’d be so many alerts I’d never want to go through all them.
I do occasionally miss when someone has quoted me, I find, but all in all it’s a good system.
I set my prefs to not subscribe to threads I post in, I basically just get notifications on quotes and stuff i explicitly subscribe to. So its pretty easy to track.
That’s what I do, too. I think when I miss one, it’s because there’s 6 items in the Alert list and I only scroll down to the 5th one. So user error, which no system can eliminate entirely.
haha i sometimes forget to check my “watched threads”! then im all like WHOA! look at all these awesome posts i missed!
I love when that happens. It’s like expecting to get a present for Christmas, but you come downstairs and see the living room is LOADED with toys, and every one of them has your name on it.
I guess that is why I want email notifications… I’d rather know about threads I’m participating in and be able to decide whether I want to continue getting notifications or not. I seldom look at the alerts here on the forum but look at the emails as they come in. Kind of why I wish the new Asset Store feature notifying of wish list items on sale were emailed too instead of just alert. Would be nice to get all my alerts in one place so I don’t have to try to remember all the different places to look for updates. ![]()
btw… So far it seems like the setting is working. I’ve quit doing my unfollow thread and refollow specifying email (which was the workaround I was doing before to make sure I was getting email notifications on threads I responded in)… So far, so good. Now I’m wondering how long I had been doing that after it was working. lol
