FPS help

I’m still new to Unity. But is there an easy way to create a First Person Perspective Shooter player?
I would like to have it:
Steer with the mouse (turn the whole body),
Move forward, backward and Strafe with the keyboard,
Most importantly, to be able to look down at your body, which means I need to clamp that motion, but allow the head/camera to turn with the rest of the body during steering. I’ve been working on this for 2 weeks now and I’m beginning to think it is not possible.

What’s the way everybody else uses? Please, I’m running out of hair to pull out.

How easy it is depends on how sophisticated it needs to be.

Have you tried the first-person controller from Unity Standard Assets?

If I recall, it doesn’t include the “shooting” part, but you could use it as a starting point.

There’s a lot of different strategies but basically, you can:

  • Spend a few months learning the engine and getting comfortable with programming.

  • Find something on the Asset Store. If you search for FPS, tons of pre-made character controllers pop-up. Some are free, but sometimes you get only as good as what you pay for.

  • Hire someone else to do it (if you can’t find what you’re looking for on the Asset Store and have a lot of extra money).

  • Settle for a less sophisticated character controller (a lot of people don’t go for this option).

The character controller is the most fundamental and important part of any action game, so of-course it’s also going to be the most difficult part to get right. Expect it to take more than just two weeks, especially if you’re a beginner.

I suspect most people just use one of the drop in FPS assets which handle much of this for you.

Unity has itself put out multiple FPS examples. Here’s one of them:

Then there’s a bunch of them on the Asset Store. UFPS is probably the most well regarded:

Nice! I didn’t know about that one but it looks pretty good
