FPS Survival Zombie Game

Hello!

I’ve been working on a fps zombie survival game for about 2 and a half months now and thought it would be cool to show you guys what I’ve done and hopefully get some good feedback and CC
I don’t currently have build up that you can play, but I do plan on uploading a webplayer build soon.

Link to game’s youtube playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL915DDEBDB8D34FBA&feature=view_all
Latest update video:

I’ll also be posting pictures fairly regularly of models/designs/animations that I’ve created and would like feedback on.

I’m currently thinking about creating the HUD. I’ve created a design in photoshop, what do you guys think of it?

Thanks for reading! Cheers.

Edit:
Here’s a link to the latest build of my new procedural weapon system (very primitive atm!):
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/99034891/Demos/Procedural%20Weapon%20v1.3/Procedural.html

just read this post and watched the video, Looks very good for what you have done, many other things need to be done, Such as I saw that in the video the door to go outside ( to me ) looks very small and only the player can fit through it but zombies are slightly taller so would collide into the doorway and causing a “glitch” like thing to the game

UPDATE: there are some great zombie assets in the store for free if you need any zombie models ect

Nice, interested in your future updates, I will restate as ZBlade stated that there are a lot of free assets in the store that you can use.

Thanks for the comments guys! I don’t really like using other peoples assets as I learn so much doing everything myself, I’m probably going to try recruit a few people to work with me at some stage in the future though, for as you say, very many things still need to be done lol.

Also just wanted to mention that the zombies in that video are for testing purposes only! Don’t want anyone to think that was my best attempt at modeling a zombie XD

Thanks for noticing the doorway was too small, I’ll fix that immediately!

Trust us, we knew those were just temp zombies, haha!

I completely understand that you do not want to use any other people’s work, but when showing videos it occasionally helps.

If you did this all by yourself so far, that is very impressive.

One thing though and I think this is because there are no textures or materials added to anything just yet. The game feels like there is no depth perception to it, it was hard for me to judge how far away an asset was or how far a wall was from the playable character’s perspective. Could have been from your recording software though or I may be just over thinking it.

Haha good
Yup, all me so far, thank you.
I don’t really see what you’re saying about the depth perception, but possibly my recording software is doing it as you suggested (I see the quality of the recording was quite bad…) Or if not that perhaps the fog effect I have applied is at fault. I’ll experiment with that.

Edit: Turned off fog and immediately saw what you were talking about lol, I’ll either remove it or make it a lot more subtle. Thanks for pointing that out.

Great eye on the Fog, but don’t remove, unless you are going to want to have some maps have dark long corridors where you do not want the player to see that far. The fog is set to grey by default, set to black that might help. Fog is useful, but it is hard to control, either you want it or don’t.

Also to add great suspense and horror to it (as it is a zombie game after all) is to go to your render settings and change the Ambient Lighting to a little bit more darker such as greyish - blackish, Believe me, when all the textures are placed and such, The game will look creepier, I have an idea also.
Aswell as zombies, you can have creepy things going on such as Faulty Machinery, Ghostly movements of doorways say, like a hallway with 8 rooms and only two rooms are enterable by a ghostly door with changes everytime you enter and exit the area, so if the doors were at room 5,6 The next time they will warp to say 2.8 so everything gets confusing and the player wont have such luck when ( if a "Pack’a’Punch or some sort ) was in room 6, and u didn’t have enough so you killed zombies in another area, next time you get in that area you won’t be able to get back in unless the doors warp back to room 6 If you get what i mean from this

I should have also mentioned the Ambient Lighting as well. Very Important. Thanks ZBlade!

Mwahaha  + before you say it, Also it maybe helpful to attach as flashlight to your weapons and make them turn on/off using the “f” key or something if you are going to use ambient lighting

Cool thanks, I will play around with the ambient lighting. I’ll start working on some faulty machinery right away as well!
Since you mentioned the pack-a-punch machine, thought I’d share my current ideas for the weapon upgrade system so you can tell me what you think.
When you upgrade your weapon there will be one random thing from each of the following slots added to it:
Weapon Cammo: Red, Blue, Green, Gold
Optical Sight: RDS, ACOG, Sniper scope, Undecided
Underbarrel: Knife, Flame Thrower, Flashlight, Grenade Launcher (hmm, grenade launcher with an underbarrel grenade launcher? Interesting lol…)

As well as increased damage, rate of fire, mag capacity and all that stuff.
That way it’s not the same upgrade every time…

Might as well share the simple sniper I just modelled. Got borderlands 2 today so I have been very unproductive XD.
Also added in headshot detection. Now to make detachable limbs…

Looks great! I haven’t played any of the Borderlands saga games, it looks good though.

It has been a long time since I have seen a knife at the end of the rifle, that would be fun.

It looks great so far. It’s very ambitious to make all the models yourself, but then again I tend to do that too. Have fun with it!

Do you plan on adding some survival stuff such as looking for food and water and sleeping? That would be awesome.

To be honest you really don’t have to do what I ask since they are only ideas which you could put into the game (for me) to make it much better (in my opinion) but any ideas of mine in which you do add to the game then thats great too! Pack-A-Punch type weapons look amazing, Very good work on the model

Thanks Oana, I know its pretty ambitious and I am sort of toying with the idea of finding a few people to work with me, but I’ll see…
I haven’t really thought about survival elements like that yet, but it is a possibility.

ZBlade - Well I’ve liked all your ideas so far, so they’re all probably going in lol
Glad you like the model!

I’ve been working a bit on the ability to add optical sights to your weapons. Just wanted to share a picture of the scoped anaconda because I thought it looked awesome lol.

looking awesome haha ( looks like the python with the ACOG scope on Black Ops )
And thanks mate for adding in my ideas, I actually thank you, cause Its obviously your project and such but yeah, Thanks anyway

Could I Design A HUD In Photoshop using one of ur “Raw” Pictures of gameplay?

Sure, that would be awesome.
Here’s the pic I used if you want: http://www.flickr.com/photos/72559047@N02/8034165422/in/photostream

What type of colour scheme would you like? Dark, Greyish, Transparent?

UPDATE: The hud may look a bit wierd but it would have a kinda 3D look to it, Like in Crysis, the hud isn’t like 2d-ish, Its kinda parented with the main camera and when you move it will follow to give it a more realistic look if thats ok?

I think a dark colour scheme would be best, but if it’s too obstructive to the player’s view then transparent would be cool as well. Yeah, I know what you mean, good idea.
