Free Colt M4 model

Sorry I know this is not showcasing a game or demo, but rather a single model. I put this post in here to get exposure to the folks in this thread as well.

Since it’s a new year and a fresh start I thought I would share a model I created last year, but have never used for anything of purpose. I don’t know much about licensing, other than I am giving this model away for free, for both commercial usage and personal usage. If you do use it commercially it would be nice to get a link to see it in action!
I don’t require any sort of credit, etc…if used in a commercial project.

It’s in OBJ format, so should be importable into almost all 3D applications. I exported the OBJ with normal and smoothing group information, so it should be good to go in respect to the hard and smooth edges. It has UVS completed as well, but it is advised to maybe go in an optimize those a bit better on parts.

Download the Colt M4 here

Looks pretty good and detailed, nice work.

nice looking M4 mate might be a tad high poly wise in a few areas, some parts your better off leaving to normals and diffuse than geometry, but from what i can see, the scale, fit, feel, shape, and sense of space are right (tiss a rare thing to see) can’t see the reverse side be im guessing its set properly with the ejection chamber and so on.

Whats the polycount?

Don’t worry about the flash hider and barrel so much mate, at the angle there liable to be seen at even a 6 sided cylinder will work, and your not likely to see the bit that thins out so i would just leave that out, same as the flash hider, takes far to many polys to edit cylinders for what will be only partially visible mate.

If i was you i would make me another highpoly m4a1, optimize this bad boy a fair amount and normal map it over, will probably loss 1000s polys and gain alot more detail. but avas thats alot more work lolz.

Really nice model mate, looks like youv played with an M4 before most people mess the shape up from using to many side view references lolz.

MrSmive - Yes this model could most definitely use some optimizing, I figure someone could even detail this model out some more and build a low poly version around it. It does have all the proper stuff on the other side, ejection port cover, etc. I think the UVs could definitely use some optimizing as well, but it’s a good proportionate base to work around I think. I was a US Marine for 5 years, so I handled this weapon quite a bit…I think that familiarity is what allowed me to get pretty close to accurate. I hope it helps someone out, somewhere. I’d like to see it put to use, it was collecting virtual dust in my hard drive. Thanks for the good crits.

figured ya had to have had one in ya hands at some point mate, seen 100s of m4a1 models and about 5 that have the right shape lolz.

Your right this would make a pretty killa base for zbrush or just adding some more detail, and also a great base for optimizing for the lowpoly. In essence you got a great base for both a high and low poly model. Should get some more shots of this gals other sides. Though im sure you’ll have plenty of downloads before too long.

Never had the chance to play with the real one, but when ever i need that real feel reference, i go get an air soft version, there cheap, most are 1to1 replicas and for the most part only the markings materials and stripping are wrong. Being able to hold the weapon makes a huge difference when modeling lolz, so if you make one your not so familiar with but want that same easy model, accurate and perfectly proportionate look, go get ya self the BB gun version and play with that for a few days.

Last year I did start texturing the model, but the project I was making it for fell through and so I ceased work on this model for other ventures. These are a couple of screengrabs of the texturing progress I did make.

and the embarrassing untextured backside lol:

wow mate, what the hell you doing go finished this thing lmao!

Thanks man. Well I’m on to new things. I guess my rational is by giving it away here someone somewhere will do this model justice and use it for something professional. I would really like to see it in action in a game!

Thanks for the model!

for having no normals it looks dam realistic mate, what do the uvs look like on this thing?

Just had a funny idea was all…

Could fix this bad boy up, and post it as a little texturin competition.
Give it a couple weeks and see whos skin looks the best with a vote or something, fair amount of guys on here lack know how when it comes to making skins for things so the chance to work on a nice model properly uvmapped would probably give them some more insight, rather than editing one that’s made or simply never making one them selves ever.

In the end its some advertising for you mate, some people will learn some stuff, some of us will get to look at some nice pics, and most people who spend time making a skin for something will want to use it in the projects more.

one more thought if you do set it up something like that, make a quick unity project with a camera and the model set so as the participants renders will all be the same angles and inUnity rather than one in 3ds one in blender and a bunch of SS’s.

Dont see as why there would be any problem putting the thread here as its showcasing what can be done in unity, wouldn’t take that long to set up and would be something a bit different and new.

here here!!!

good idea… to bad I suck a skinning lol

can you recommend any good tutorials for it?

Looks great, but 8.4k verts seemed like alot, couldnt figure out what you wasted on it, still its a great model. Will you release the one with the texture once your done? Would appreciate it.

Some guy told me to look at that, helped me a bunch will probably help you mate.

Wow thats a good tutorial! helped me a lot!

Artimese - Yes it does have some wasted unnecessary geometry. It’s more than likely around the handguard area and all the front cylinders. I intended this originally to be the high res model I would build a lower res around and extract a normal map from. Like I said before this model was abandoned well before any real optimizations or normal map creation. I did start working on a diffuse texture on it, but it was a test and only one side of the model.

MrSmive - I think a texturing competition would be awesome. I honestly don’t know how soon I could put the work into optimizing it, but I would most definitely participate in a texturing competition if someone were to be so kind to optimize it! Someone take the initiative on it, start a new thread for the comp and just put a link back to it in here. Maybe someone can put up a set of guidelines or limits and a deadline and we could get going on it!

PS - On a side note, Crysis 1st person weapons run about 6000 tris, Gears of War 1st person weapons run around 2000-4000 tris, and so on.

But runs on cryengine/unreal engine, which doesnt compare to the speed of which unity runs at, you can have a scene in cryengine with 2m tris, and run at 50fps, but a scene in unity with 2m tris that runs at 30fps, not sure how it works but those million dollar engines seem to be much more efficent in polygons. Still, not complaining its a great model!

Artimese - Well said. Unity will get there I’m sure.

Bump for anyone needing a free Colt M4 model.

wow, perfect  but i think the poly count is a bit high!

Updated the model repository. There is now an entire medieval building and fence set…also added in some higher resolution quality trees (still for game use though).
