ermm… if it is free to play then it is free… Commercial means that you sell it.
Actually you can have stuff like in game wares and advertisements. I think that is what he is referring to. In my opinion, completely free would be the best but if you spent that long on an MMO I doubt you would not want some compensation.
Both…obviously… this question didn’t need to be asked, really.
If it’s free to play…then it’s free.
If you can buy things in an item shop… it’s commercial.
Most free to play games are both free and commercial. The new wave of AAA titles hitting FREE2PLAY are free to play some parts of the game (the main parts) but the rest of the game is pay to play.
I think this is a great model. At first I didn’t like it-- then it hit me how perfect it is. Free2Play allows for a huge amount of population, as well as it being…FREE! No need for a free trial as well, which I always used…way too much.
And you know what? For LESS than $15 a month, I can unlock a lot of the stuff I want to in the game, and have a BLAST playing. While my friends can unlock nothing or more. In the end, you can always spend less than $15 a month and still get more than what you usually play.
And…it’s fun to buy stuff. For me anyway. It’s fun to collect it. It’s fun to control your money. It’s fun to not be forced to pay when you dont want to, but allowed to for benefits when you CAN pay.
And the population is flooded with Freebies, who are both a sense of fun and enjoyment, as well as a sense of “I pay to play…so I’m better than these people…” which is always true. You aren’t just paying to become like everyone else! You are paying to be “better than the rest” which is cool. But in the end, you aren’t technically better- you just FEEL superior because you get all these minUTE perks.
I would gauge your answer off your profitable income generated through your game by any means. Most licensing will have a clause stating the fact is you earn over X amount of CURRENCY then you are deemed to require the commercial product.
If you earn money for yourself(eg to spend on stuff unrelated to game) then it’s commercial. If you ask and use money only to pay for server and staff, it counts as nonprofit because you don’t make any profit. Though many companies that do comm and noncomm licenses will still consider that as profit, thus ask either for more costy license or %.
i mean there are severeal free scripts out there but they need to be bought if ur project is commercial…
im a student and only doin my project in freetime…
should hav ethe model mentioned by emergence…
so can i use it for free or do i have to pay…?
cause i dont really make money with their stufff…
If you are making money off the game, then it is commercial. If it’s a web based game that’s free to play but you make money off advertisements on the page, then the game could be considered commercial.
Not only could but would.
If you make a single dime with it thats not done through donations, the project is technically commercial. For donations it depends a bit on your country as what it is considered if commercial or not.
If your primary problem is that you don’t awnt to pay for scripts also available for free, then you best contact them and see if they offer a royality based model but keep in mind that this will make the work for you later on more painfull as you would need to do bookkeeping etc and its normally not worth it as such scripts for unity are in the <$200 range. Always keep in mind the amount of time such persons work safes you on your project (even if you rate your time at $1 unrealistically you will still easily safe money). What I would recommend is creating other small projects or create art packages and sell them to make the money to invest into 3rd party technology for your “main project”
