Freelance concept art pricing

Hello, I was wondering what would be the price for some concept art. I have a client that wanted some concept art and I was wondering how much should I charge? Example, something like this:

Thanks guys

Vince

How long does it take you to come up with something like that? I’d be doing it on a per hour basis personally

Depending, I’d say 3-5hours or mor depending on the complexity of the task but average around 5hours I guess, I’m not really sure I never really checked the time I put on photoshop. On an hourly basis how much should I charge ?

PS: Just in case I did not make that image, it’s just an example because I am not home right now.

Without seeing the quality of your work, if that isn’t your’s. I’d be charging 5-15 USD per hour, but that might seem steep for some people. Quite a few people on the Unity forums, seem to like to get everything handed to them. but take a read of this article when you get a chance.

Really? I find it a bit cheap, not saying I deserve more, it’s just that I do Web design, logos, brochures and stuff and people pay alot for that, example for a logo 500$-1000$ and it can go up. And for a website 25$-75$/Hour. These are just numbers I have from a payment sheet I have for guidelines but just to compare.

Keep in mind that your target are indies that are doing everything they can themselves because they can’t afford paying for anyone to do it.

Companies are… well, budgeted. And also they know their logo is VERY important so they will spend a lot of money on it.

Heck, if I was to bill myself for the same rate I get paid as a programmer, I’d bankrupt myself overnight! :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks guys, I don’t really know indie art stuff, it’s just there’s a lot of people asking me to buy some of my art and they offer me a lot of money and I wasnt sure about the business side of the indie games. But it’s fine if thats the average pricing  I’m not a greedy bastard haha .

Judge how much time it’ll take for you to do the piece (and account for around 1/3 - 1/2 of that time again to account for any changes/revisions that may arise). Multiply that by how much you want to get paid per hour - be generous here, don’t sell yourself short or it’ll bite you eventually. I wouldn’t go less than $20/hr.

I’d stipulate a clause in the contract for a maximum amount of revisions before you get paid more, otherwise it becomes a horrible prolonged thing of back-and-forth and you end up getting bugger all money for the work you put in.

And then there’s your final cost. And always, always get that in a contract specifying the amount payable to you, a fairly detailed breakdown of the work requested, maximum amount of revision time and the deadline set by the client.

I know what youre talkin about haha, at work that happened, they changed all the 44 pages 2 days before the date limit -_-

You can always offer some kind of deal that may benefit you best. Given an indie’s weak position, exclusivity is something they may not be able to afford and willing to sacrifice.

You may be able to offer exclusivity at a higher rate, or the right to sell the same designs to other parties for a lesser fee.

As an asset or design provider offering your work to indies, you may get more out of your time by non-exclusive agreements (like selling 3D models in the Asset Store.)

I thought about that but I wasn’t sure because I’m a good modeler but still I’m not a professionnel, I learned by myself so my models aren’t always as optimized as I would like them to be, but I have surprised myself a few times with some really good lookin models.

For the profit side of things, how much do you think I could make if I sell models or assets in general regularly just speculating to make a choice here. I can compose some music too I play various instruments and have the equipement to record sounds and stuff but as i said I’m not a professionnel.

To be honest I dont know since I dont sell there. But I have heard that if you want to sell there, it’s best to start with “sets”, like “dungeon construction kit” that contains most the geometry needed for that, or “Roman Empire model set”, etc etc.

I have collected that independent models dont sell very well.

Edit to add:
Oh another way you can “sell” your services is by offering a bit of a partnership, where you offer some design for free in exchange of royalties of the final product’s sales. Just make sure to have enough contact information if you pursue that, so no one goes out running with your work.

Yes it is rather cheap for a designer, but that price was so low because of 2 reasons. 1) I was unsure of the quality of your work and 2) as Tharsman has said, you are most targetting indies who will be looking for free help or very cheap help if any paid help at all.

+1 to you Tharsman

For the assets, do you think I should sell them here or maybe another more profitable website or both maybe I’m new to this market so I dont really know whats the market for this, my friends suggested that I sell my stuff and services so I was was lookin around to see my options. So that’s when i got the client and wanted to see your opinions.

I’m not entirely sure about the pricing or the profit/sellability? of the unity asset store, I’d be taking a quick look around it to check out other models/art assets quality and price, and then try and put your’s in the middle of it somewhere based on your quality. But there’s no harm in selling your assets on more than one website, or doing up packs and then offering a personalised service if people like your work.

I’ll inform myself for the prices and such, and if some of you know any good website to sell assets on would be nice to have, I live in Canada if that makes any difference.
