So, me and my friend were chit-chatting today and he was sort of acting weird. Like, pretending he was a developer for a game company and stuff. I don’t know him IRL so I can’t really say one way or another but I’m fairly certain he’s BSing me.
Anyways, at one point, he sends a file to me and then goes “oops, that’s top secret stuff, you better not open that.”
So, naturally, I immediately began searching for ways to open it.
To my understanding, this is a lightweight Flash file, or .lwf file.
I tried searching around on Google and the closest I ever came to some sort of answer on how to use or potentially open an .lwf was from a forum thread here, but the Github linked was dead so I’m coming to you guys desperate for help.
The curiosity is killing me and he won’t tell me what’s in it.
I would attach it here but the file extension is weird and unsupported. Will send screenshots of what I find if you can help out.
P.S. I am pretty inexperienced with this sort of thing so try to explain this to me like I’m a moron but like not condescendingly.
I think you might be on the wrong forum. This is for 2D portions of the Unity3D API.
The literal only constructive mention of LWF files came from this forum.
I have nothing else to go off of.
I am begging.
Officially, please do not post anything that isn’t related to Unity 2D features on the 2D forum.
I’ll move this non-2D related post to the General Discussion forum.
sounds more like trojan/virus attempt then, if you dont know him and someone just sends you a file?
scan with antivirus,
check with hexviewer whats inside, post screenshot
Don’t run the file. Your friend has had their account compromised, the attacker is trying for your account next by pretending to send you a game in an intriguing way.
Don’t fall for it mate. It’s not worth the risk.
Under the circumstances, I’m astonished that you’re even considering opening this file. I would delete it immediately. Scan for viruses like others suggested.
also by default, windows wont show the actual file extension, unless you have enabled it,
They do have a website, in case you haven’t found it: LWF by GREE
The Github there is not down but between 5 and 10 years old.
Your an idiot if you open that file, even windows is telling you that. Your quote "he was sort of acting weird. Like, pretending he was a developer for a game company and stuff. Anyways, at one point, he sends a file to me and then goes “oops, that’s top secret stuff, you better not open that.”, and your going to listen to him?, and open it?.
Ill see you in about a week, once youve wasted days trying to get rid of it, failing, and possibly having to re-install windows, no way. NEVER accept or open ANY file sent that is UNKNOWN!.
If OP posts here sharing a link to the file we’ll know what’s happened.
Honestly an attacker will send you an .exe, not something you gotta find an obscure launcher yourself, or am I wrong?
That said, yeah, there is that trick with “I’m a dev now, wanna try my first game?” is indeed one that has been used to compromise computers. Just normally they try to make it as easy as possible to fall for it, so it’s an exe, lol.
The world would’ve been a simpler place if people kept using orthodox file managers to this day.
It’s probably the buttering up phase. The file may even be just junk. It’s later on when they “give in” that a usable file with a payload will come, when the victim feels like it was their own idea to ask for more.
Though I certainly would treat the file as a threat.
