Galaxy Crash Project

Hello everyone!

I would like to share with you all what myself and the rest of our team are currently working on. We’re looking for some feedback from the Unity forums community to help us solidify the game’s design and features.

Public demo now available on our new website! Try out two demo levels of an early test build here

The Project

Galaxy Crash - A fun, space themed tower defence game where manipulation of lighting conditions can make the difference between life and death.

What is Galaxy Crash?
Galaxy Crash is a unique, space themed tower defence game where the sun plays a crucial role. Planetary resources are under threat from an alien race. Humans must ensure their survival by defending these resources. Where does the sun come in? The sun is the game-changer. Both species rely on solar power for energy and so try to maximise their use of it. By manipulating the light and shadows falling across a planet you can strategically influence conditions for yourself and your opponent.

Game Features

– 50 level campaign across 5 fictional star systems.
– Strong emphasis on sunlight which affects the level state and its new inhabitants.
– Various upgradeable weapons can be placed onto the planet.
– Various special weapons for offensive and defensive attacks.
– Achievements to unlock.
– Various extra mini games and challenges to unlock.
– Leaderboards for competitive players.

The Story
In the year 2133 Earth’s natural resources have almost depleted, leaving it in a desperate state. Countries across the globe resolve to work together to excavate fuels from planets in nearby star systems. The strong combined global effort is what makes this possible. However, an alien race of bugs share a similar predicament to Earth.

Despite an advancement in technology their greediness and arrogance towards other races is reflected in their relentless and irresponsible consumption of resources. With their civilization, like humanity, on the brink of collapse they have rushed in to extract whatever they can from the neighbouring dormant planets, threatening human existence.

Your mission is to capture these planets by defeating the waves of bugs and Motherships before they can bleed all planetary resources dry.

I’m not that into tower defence. but i like the sunlight idea, how will you visualize this?

Hey jister,

Many thanks for your response. The sunlight is the primary concept of the game, and so far, the build does not really show this. The visualisation still requires finalising, however, this is what we have agreed so far that is currently being implemented into the game:

For the player:
Sunlight is required in order to build towers. Additionally, the sunlight is used to maintain power to the towers. This is achieved by placing solar panel towers in areas where the sunlight is exposed onto the planet. We also agreed that solar panels may be placed within the darker areas, obviously however, not as much power is generated. This is a way to keep solar panels safe in levels containing many sun-based enemies. The power level will be represented with a HUD indicator containing three coloured sections, green being fine, yellow being caution and red being danger. If the total power level is too low, the towers will go into lock-down mode and cease to function until power is restored, leaving your defences wide open.

For the enemies:
You may notice the two mushroom-like objects on the bugs’ backs. These are solar based, organic body parts that gather the solar energy and enables special abilities that varies across each bug type. For the basic enemy type, this will simply double their strength, therefore, increasing their damage resistance. Other enemies will use the energy for different purposes, like speed, attack strength, agility, resource draining speed, etc. How this will be visualised is unclear, but some ideas consisted of auras, pulsing textures, small particle effects, etc.

It should be noted however, that not all enemies prefer the sunlight, but instead prefer to remain in the shade and will share abilities like the ones highlighted above. The player is therefore recommended to be vigilant at tower placement and enemy observation as well as monitoring all areas of the planets.

One more thing on an unrelated note, not all levels will be just a simple sphere, but will also contain various geographical elements such as mountains, oceans and some planets will be oddly shaped. Finally, harder and later levels will contain weather effects such as snow, rain and lightning storms that affect both sides.

I hope this covers what you asked, please let me know if anything else requires clarification.

Jamie

Hey very nice concept! I like the whole sunlight idea, I can imagine that you’ll be having different day-night cycles on each planet and other features.

How big is the planet going to look in the end? I’m having a bit of a hard time not looking at it as a moon, I know you have to keep it manageable but I think increasing the size would not only look better but would would it more interesting in terms of strategy and complexity.

Best of luck with the KS!

Hey Music Vortex, thanks for the compliments

The planets are going to vary in size across the game. The planet featured in the images I’ve shared with you is the smallest one.

I’ve updated the original post with an updated gameplay trailer.

Here it is again just in case:

Update.

Added new HUD concept design.

Good luck on development!

Thanks buddy, after discussing with the rest of the team, we have officially named that tower after you, rather than the original invention!

Anyways, massive update! A public demo of our game, playable within the browser, is now available! Try out two demo levels at our still to be constructed website

As always, feedback is most welcome.

Jamie.

Updated the original post with the latest gameplay footage.

Uh Oh, it seems that a new tower has become available. The new Mine weapon will detonate as soon as an enemy bug wanders into its immediate radius!
