Game Animation: Unity vs Blender

Hello everyone,
I am interested in learning to do some game animations.
I would like to do things from the simple walking animation, to short game films.

I have never done any animation before, and I am wondering whether Unity or Blender
would be a better choice for game animation? And for what reason(s)?

Thanks all,

Obviously Blender. Unity is not a modelling/ animation software, you can do some simple animations with that cool feature but you won’t be able to do anything much with it in terms of character animating etc. If you want to learn serious animation then no doubt you should use Blender (or maya, 3ds max, cinema4d etc)

Yes, Blender is by far the better program to do animations in. You can import animations from Blender to Unity if you really want to work in Unity, but what’s the point if it’s already set up and working in Blender?

Okay, maybe that’s just me, but I really like the unity animator… All my camera flights and even some pretty good character animations are done in unity itself. The only problem is that unity’s animator doesn’t support inversed kinematics, but only forward kinemtic, means: Unity only does like bone animation, while maya and co. also support all the other cool assistance tool whic make animating a lot easier.
If you are completely new to animating, it might be worth a try to just use unity, because I think blender is much more difficult to use for animations.

Thanks for all of the info guys!

I am planing on using the animations on games made in Unity.
If I use Blender for the animations will this effect it in any way?

Once again, thanks everyone!

If you export to a format from Blender to FBX for example, you should have no problems “storing” your animations. Meaning that when they play back in Unity, they’d be like ones that you made in Blender. Give it a go and let us know if you have issues!
