I am looking to get into Game Design. Any suggestions as to where to get training/schooling?
First make sure game design is what you want to do. Read Liz England’s The Door Problem.
Many more opportunities will open for you if you have an art or engineering background. Include fine arts or computer science schools in your search, depending upon which you’re intersted in. If you’re in school, ask your school counselor for advice. Be wary of for-profit educational businesses.
Having applicable art or programming skills will make you immediately valuable to teams in game jams and school projects where you can start building your portfolio. No team wants an “ideas person,” so they have a hard time getting onto teams to actually build portfolios, which are what get you hired as a designer. And speaking of game jams, participate in many, including Global Game Jam next month.
Imho… you should stay away from “schools” that offer “game design degrees”.
