Game Idea

Hello everyone!

It has been a long while since I’ve been with you all at the Unity community, and I have had a lot of time to come up with game ideas! There is one in particular that I would like to see visualized, however. It is only a very small idea, and needs to be fleshed and given life. Please keep in mind I had a very short vision, almost, like I was discovering the idea, and I only had the experience for maybe a few short seconds.

Imagine, if you could, rows upon rows of cryogenic stasis pods that, when activated, rapidly thaw the soldier inside. The pods are then launched from the ship they are housed in towards the ground. They are drop pods designed for rapid insertion of troops who know nothing but battle.

As I have said numerous times, it is only a small idea and needs to be expanded upon. I will be doing several drawings and matte paintings to illustrate this idea. I would like you all to participate in defining this idea! I am just one guy and would appreciate the help. I feel like this could be a very successful game if done right. I believe a good game needs a good foundation, and the foundation for a game is a rich backstory and a believable world. Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

sounds like space marines

Ah, I’ve heard of Space Marines, I was just never interested. I do know the art style of the series, and I was hoping to go in a grittier direction. More of a realistic approach. I don’t want big hulking suits of armor and all that. Just soldiers being sent to war.

Could just keep it simple and go with Cryosoldiers or something like that. Cyrowars…

Sounds like Halo ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper).

That’s actually what I was thinking of! Creating a simple multiplayer game that’s fun to play!

It’s funny you should mention that, I was playing Halo: ODST when the idea occurred to me.

:-? Not sure if troll…

What do you mean? I’ve gotten another friend of mine to hop on board! We’re fleshing out the look and world right now!

Er… Halo ODST is about “rows upon rows of cryogenic stasis pods that, when activated, rapidly thaw the soldier inside. The pods are then launched from the ship they are housed in towards the ground. They are drop pods designed for rapid insertion of troops who know nothing but battle.”

Forget the idea for a minute. Do you have experience? I’ve learned the hard way that without experience, something like this, especially multiplayer, is very complicated and hard to do.

I’ve been making small projects and practicing with my new rig for quite some time now. I’ve been modeling in blender since I was 13. That goes the same for unity. I will admit, I did learn the way you did!

Glad you see what you’re getting into. I’ve wanted to give up so many times on this zombie project I’m working on. I’ve wanted to put it down, throw it out the window, and start fresh. But I kept on pushing. And I’m still pushing. Sometimes it gets so bad that I wish I didn’t get into game development. But I continue because I dream of the final project. We’ve been through tough times: broken computers, complete haults, no programmers, etc. but now it’s looking better than ever and it will pay off on release day. Stay with it, whatever you do.

The main problem wouldn’t be the players or the maps or the weapons. I think the main problem would be the programming skills required to make the multiplayer part of the game. I don’t know how it is to work with Unity on Multiplayer games, but in .NET is a real PITA.

Anyone with experience on that could share some lights…

This. Although my teams problems revolved around lack of a decent rig, dtg is completely right, it is much harder when the only pushing force behind it is your own will, you will have highs, lows, scream offs, cries… You know… The usual

If you’ve seen Indie Game: The Movie, it’s pretty awesome.

What you have here is no “game idea”, it’s not even a story idea, it’s a tiny idea for a “universe/world/situation” where a story could take place.
It seems you think here along the lines of a Halo like multiplayer shooter, however your idea could be implemented in a strategy game or jump and run as well. You wouldn’t even need a own game for it, it might be implemented as a custom map in an already existing game.

If you want to expand on the idea you also could think out of the box. It does not have to be a game you are able to create, it does not have to be a game at all. Somethimes it’s just fun to create a world or a game in your mind, without the boundaries of what you may achieve or may not achieve.

Also a story in a competitive multiplayer game has only minor relevance. Of course you have a world around your game, however the “story” has to be delivered by other means (e.g. Single Player (like Halo), Briefings (like Battlefield) or other media like movies (Star Wars).

+1. Game ideas are things like “A shooter where you play as a tribal native setting traps for your opponents” or “A medieval-fantasy city-building game with roguelike elements”. Too many people think games are about the world, the graphics, the visible theme. And the world really does add a lot! Left 4 Dead wouldn’t be nearly as fun without the zombies - but it would still work as a game with robots or aliens or multicolored cubes.
