Game Mechanic Ideas

I’m trying to come up with an idea for a new game. Nothing big. Just for fun and because I haven’t coded in a while and I’m trying to get back into it. Can’t think of anything interesting to make though. Can someone just name a random game mechanic that could lead to an interesting game? Thx

A bouncy ball that rebounds off of things. You throw it, judging how it will bounce, and have to complete puzzles with it.

Could make a simple bowling game.

But you have to make it land in a basket WHILE ON A MOVING PLATFORM. With aliens shooting at you! (Human) Cheerleaders cheering you on. Also: you have to fix sandwiches for patrons at a restaurant while you do all of this because you’re a jack of most trades.

Do “This meets that”. Never fails.

Galiga plus Tetris - Place pieces in place as you are in a tiny ship fighting off enemies trying to mess you up.

“One of us” - a game where you observe alien movement patterns and then introduce yourself to them by doing those same movements. If you screw up, they eat you.

Like a memory game?

Lots of good ideas here - typical quickies I can think of right now are sky shooter, asteroid shooter, block/brick breakers, word games (hangman, etc.), lots of board games are around in the public domain. Simple robot arena, a “dodge stuff” game where you just have to move left and right or whatever directions for whatever fixed perspective, reaction-based games like whack-a-mole style, or like @Joe-Censored suggested bowling, or like curling, horseshoes, fishing, card games, …could merge a couple of games like @Not_Sure said - might come up with something interesting (though that would be more complicated, given it’s effectively at least 2 games in 1). Maybe start with something quick you can do in a few days to get warmed up. The memory game idea is a good one, could do that easily with cards or numbers or colors or sounds or a mix of whatever.

Yeah pretty much

Could go one step further and make it a pattern analysis game. You do a thing, aliens respond in a certain way. Aliens do a thing, you have to figure out and perform the correct response. Perhaps instead of not dying what you’re actually trying to do is figure out how to get the aliens to do a particular thing?

Now I think on it, I wonder if that would somewhat represent how socially awkward people feel in social situations? That there’s this list of arbitrary rules they’re trying to follow, and nobody’s sharing what they are.

Reminds me of some movie whose name I can’t remember. Trying different things with aliens to see how they respond. Sounds interesting. Social Gathering Simulator 2020?

Arrival?

Ah yes!

@angrypenguin I like that idea, the aim of the game could basically be to learn a language.
I wonder if that sort of thing has been done before.

A bouncing ball that is actually a ball like alien, that has a camouflage ability, and is trying to investigate your house, and steal your foody.
