So I’m working on a project with some people, and we got a little discussion.
In this group I’m doing 3D modeling & Texturing, we also have a level designer.
Would it be my job as a modeler to import the models(fbx) and textures into unity, apply the texture to the model, make that into a prefab and and export it as a package so the level designer only has to import the package and drag and drop the prefab? Or should I just deliver him the FBX and the texture, properly named in the correct folders?
Because I think I should just deliver the FBX and the Texture on the proper place and with the proper name so the level designer can import it into Unity
IMO, the artist should be making sure the model looks correct inside the engine. How’s the level designer supposed to know how you intended those things to go together? Are you sure you’ll be happy when they slap things together in the wrong way and use them?
I think it’ll cause a lot fewer problems if the artist does it.
as a 3d Artist part of my job is to not only import the content in to unity but to assure the assigned materials, shaders , animations are displaying and functioning correctly. about 25% of the time in my experience the level designers have the general knowledge on brining in assets to the game engine but would do it in such a generic fashion that there would be quality reduction and or optimization issues.
Agreed. If you’re working on a collaboration it would be crazy not to get the art in place and looking good yourself - show some pride…you’re creating art, not cups of coffee.
The exception is freelance work, in which case your models would usually be handed to another artist responsible for handling, implementing and evaluating outsourced work, and he’ll mediate with you.
