GameObject Properties in the Animation window aren't working!

NOTE: I am VERY new to Unity in general so if this might seem like common sense please go easy on me. I just can’t figure this out and I’m almost shamed I have to make a forum about this just to find out how to fix this simple issue.

I’m following along a Youtube tutorial on how to make a 3d game in Unity. All the scripting and everything that you’d probably expect me to have trouble with as a beginner to Unity, was fine for me… Then, in the video it was showing me how to make a swinging weapon animation, and as I hit the “Window” tab, then hit the “Animation” tab, the Animation window popped up as normal. Although, the properties for the weapon we were going to animate are simply not there. So as the guy I’m watching on Youtube instructs me to click on the “Position.y” button and hit “Add Key”, there is simply no properties at all. I tried selecting the actual weapon in the Scene view to see if that’d make the properties show, but it didn’t do anything.

I’m sure this is not a problem at all, and is just something I can’t figure out because I just started playing around with Unity 2 days ago and am VERY unfamiliar with it’s layout and everything, however, if someone could help me, that’d be greatly appreciated!

You need to create an animation and apply it to the object. You added an Animator component, but need an Animation component. Then in the project window click Create->Animation, and drag it onto the Animation component on the GameObject.

Thanks for the feedback but I'm confused. I just clicked the Create->Animation and dragged it to my 'Mace' Game Object, in the Hierarchy but it just created an "Animator", but not the "Animation" like I'm being taught in the Youtube tutorial. Did I not follow your directions clearly? Sorry.

On the GameObject click Add Component->Misc->Animation to add the animation component. By default it seems to try to create animator to use the new animation system. Then drag the animation you created into the animations array.

The animations are under your prefab in the project, not the hierarchy. Hope this helps!
