Games on the Unity Engine Frequently Crash to Desktop

Hey all, I’m new to these forums and I came to report an issue, the issue being that all games that run via the Unity Engine Crash to Desktop on my PC.

To elaborate, I frequently play (or try to play) Slime Rancher and Subnautica. I own both games under the Epic Games Launcher, if that helps, and without failure, after some amount of playtime, be it several hours or 10 minutes, the games crash to desktop with a small window as shown below:

That error is of course for Subnautica, with Slime Rancher the window is the same but the text says “Slime Rancher - Unity 2019.2.5f19dace1eed4cc”

In other threads on the issue I’ve seen a number of suggestions. Most prominently is of course “update your video drivers.” I wish the problem were this simple, but I’ve tried with the most up-to-date drivers and the issue persists. I’ve also taken other recommendations and rolled back my drivers to an earlier version, clean install. That didn’t help either. I’ve also heard people say that Citrix causes the error, but I don’t have Citrix on my machine. I’ve never installed nor had I even heard of it prior to this. Additionally, buried in obscurity I’ve found comments saying that deleting a certain text file, “UNCLL.tff” in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder has been known to fix the issue. I tried but the file doesn’t exist in my fonts directory, nor could Administrator Command Prompt find it. Finally, I’ve heard people say that bad memory or too little memory could cause the issue, but I have 16GB DDR4 3200 and I have tested it with Memtest86. On that note, though, my system specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-9600k, with a stable 4.9 GHz Overclock.
RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200, Extreme Memory Profiles Enabled
GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super, no overclock on either game because I can easily make high settings without it.
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 UD, on the latest BIOS version because it was mentioned in a thread about getting the most out of your CPU Overclock and general system stability.
Storage: Standard 1TB M.2 NVME SSD

That’s about it, I could relay my PCIE wi-fi card (I don’t have access to ethernet, don’t judge me), my fan setup, my case, and my power supply, but I highly doubt that’s relevant information to this error. Anyway, any other troubleshooting recommendations would be appreciated. There are so many great games on Unity and I hate not being able to run any of them stable.

Well the first thing to check would be crash logs. They’re located at %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow<GameCreatorName><GameName>\Player.log.

Alright, what should I do with it, just post the log here? Also what about the logs in \local\temp\unknown worlds\subnautica\crashes? Would those help?

Alright, here are the logs from Subnautica & Slime Rancher. I used hyphens to indicate the file paths (becuase you can’t use /,,>, etc. in folder names). I was going to include the crash folders from “Local\Temp\Monomi Park\Slime Rancher\Crashes” but they were all empty, no crash.dmp or Player.log or error.log for some reason.

You might not like this, but I strongly suspect your overclock isn’t as stable as you think. All the crash dumps point to “div” instruction failing when dividing two perfectly valid integers (for instance, 3168 / 72) with STATUS_INTEGER_OVERFLOW, which is non-sensical. This usually indicates that the processor isn’t functioning correctly and since you have an overclock, I’m inclined to think it has something to do with that.

I’d try reverting to stock clocks and see whether the crashes go away.

I notice you’re running a graphics driver from January. You could try updating your nvidia drivers.

Yeah. I mentioned in my post that I’ve tried with the most up to date drivers (457.09, released Oct 29th, 2020) to no avail. I still get the same crash issue. I ended up rolling my drivers back to an earlier version because I’ve heard from some people that it fixed the issue for them. Unfortunately that also hasn’t helped me, so I will be switching back to the newest drivers at least before I test other fixes. Thanks though.

Edit: Also I’ll try reverting to base CPU settings. It might be bit till you hear from me again because I’m going to want to run the game for a while to be sure it’s properly stable again.

Disable XMP while your at it, I have had problems with it before. Basically, run everything at stock and see what happens.

It looks like you were right about my CPU overclock being unstable. I already knew I hadn’t won the silicon lottery with my i5-9600k, what with other people reporting an easy 5GHz overclock at 1.3 Volts while I could only make 4.8 at 1.325, but damn, I didn’t know it was this bad.

Also running an RTX 2070 super with an AMD Ryzen 7 2700x though.
Both Subnautica and Below Zero crashing hard randomly. Most of the time the games crash within seconds. Yesterday I was able to play Below Zero for about an hour till it crashed though. My screen just goes black and my monitor says “no signal”. Seems like the graphic driver is crashing. I can’t even reboot my PC with the normal on/off button. I need to turn the main power switch at the back on my pc…

On my old pc with a Geforce GTX 970 Subnautica was running fine and I never had issues. Seems like the game has issues with the RTX 2070 Super?

In another forum someone said turning off the X-AMP profile in BIOS worked for him, but didn’t work for me. Tried it and the game is still crashing. My graphic card drivers are also up to date…

Those logs don’t contain any crash data. I suspect the game isn’t crashing but your whole machine is crashing.

Did you try running some stress testing software like Furmark or Prime95 to see if they’re stable over extended periods of time?

Did you monitor CPU/GPU temperatures to make sure you’re not overheating?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly:

I’ve just run Furmark and CPU Burner for 5 mins (I know, it’s not very long) and my GPU temp. maxes at 65°C and my CPU at 79°C. I upgraded my graphics card in May 2020 and did some longer stress testing and benchmarks back then and never had any issues or crashes. Games like COD Warzone run super smooth and stable usually. Had a couple random crashes a few months ago in Warzone as well but that seemed to be driver related. After the next graphic card driver update I didn’t face any crashes anymore.
Before I got the RTX 2070 super (it’s the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER GAMING OC if that matters somehow) I was running a Geforce GTX 970 and I never had issues running Subnautica with at card.
I also don’t think that it is an overheating issue at all because most of the time Subnautica or Below Zero crashes within seconds after loading into the game.
I am usually running ASUS GPU Tweak 2 on Gaming Mode and also tried running the games without it but it didn’t make a difference either.
I am clueless what the issue might be… I just would like to play those games again :frowning:

I found a fix for the issue!
I found the following post where it says if you have a high core CPU it has a negative impact on Subnautica if you use more than 4 cores:

I tried it and reduced my used cores for Subnautica to 4 cores according to the post and it works! I had not a single crash since then and can finally play the game again! I have around 10 h on Below Zero now without a single crash :slight_smile:

Is Unity ever going to fix this? It’s all well and good to tell US to update our drivers, check thermal paste, overclocking, etc. But since Unity 2020 gamers across the board are getting these random crashes, that’s a lot of extra support emails we have to deal with because of something that only affects unity. If it’s only happening with your engine, then the problem is your engine. Leaving it to us devs to tell average people to underclock their machines so they can use your software is NOT A SOLUTION.

So… are we gonna spend the rest of our time working in unity telling the portion of crashing players to check their overclocks and drivers if they want to play any unity game again? Is that your attitude? If so, I’m seriously considering moving to another engine.

“This” is not a single issue. If you have a bug to report where something is crashing, we will gladly take a look and try to solve it. As a developer, you must understand that there are thousands different ways for a program to crash. And yes, many times it is a driver issue. In the past year there have been at least 10 different reports that turned out was due to people running 5-8 year old graphics drivers. There have also been many confirmed cases caused by overclocks. It’s much more common than you think, so when a report comes in that isn’t really actionable (these logs aren’t helpful without a proper report), first thing we’ll say is check your drivers.

Also, this is not unique to Unity at all. If you google “device removed ” or “device removed ”, you’ll find thousands of reports about pretty much every widely used project out there.
