As the title says I’m sure we all have seen the many great models at sites like 3Drt, Dexsoft and Arteria. So my questions is whats the benefit of buying these great pre made models to make a RPG game, or even a FPS? Chances are someone else’s project may have the same NPC’s Assets or foliage. Yeah they most likely will use them differently from the next person but the possibility of someone noticing is still there, and what happens if they do? would you lose creditability as a designer/developer? Will people accuse you of art theft? I’m curious so I’m asking before i go buying art assets.
It pretty much comes down to whether or not you can create your own assets, or afford to have someone custom make things for you. If you’re on a limited budget, and you don’t know an awesome artist who’ll do it all for free cause he’s your buddy, then you really have no choice than to use generic assets.
I used generic creature models in my RPG “Descend” (http://www.geppetto-games.com/descend/), as well as some generic bought props, and I haven’t seen any of them used elsewhere. No one has ever recognised them or anything like that.
I would not worry about it, unless you are trying to give the impression you are a AAA studio or something. To most people, a house is just a house. Plus, a little texture modification can go a long way.
Well, reality is, that people here are buying these assets, but I havent seen any released game so far (game worthy mentioning), so dont worry. If you buy them and succeed in publishing game, you will have probably unique assets
