So I’m looking in to have sparks as a server solution and everything looks great.
I’m just confused by their pricing model.

It seems a bit cheap, and i don’t think i would ever reach that. Is there a catch?
there is none, its just hard for other backend services to compete

There’s no catch at all! 
A number of us at GameSparks team originally began our careers in game development as students and indie developers. The Indie and Student Program is designed to support and enable aspirational and resource constrained developers to carry on what they like to do most, make great games!
To successfully qualify for the program you must be a student and/or independent developer (with a team of 3 members or less). Once you are accepted you are free to use the entire of the GameSparks platform, including its first class support mechanisms, completely free! You only pay us when you achieve your first hit title, reaching 100,000 MAU’s.
