garen's not getting ripped off

nevermind. i took this post down. garen, pm me if you want to know what it’s about.

Well, that looks like it’s the Nature Rendering example here:

http://unity3d.com/examples/

Which means it’s fine, but still a bit amateur like the rest of the web page.

The license on Unity’s example stuff is:
All assets including models, textures, sounds and scripts are available for commercial and non-commercial use when used with Unity.
OverTheEdge takes no responsibility for any harm done with the assets and scripts.

So the only shame would be if Garen didn’t get compensated fairly by OverTheEdge, but I’m sure they worked that out perfectly long ago.

Cheers,
-Jon

i imagine its gotta be someone who has unity to be able to offer anything, but still WTF!!! garen’s content may be open sourced but taking it verbatim (as they’re showing it at least - it the exact same webplayer!) trying to make money off of it is unbelievably lame.

hopefully its garen ; )

Hmm, the only name listed on that site (that I could find) is Mike Nilon (see their About page).

You can’t just come in and blame people without even having talked to or knowing anything about the copyright situation.
Seriously guys, get the facts first.

i have since been in touch with them and it is a legit usage with unity. sorry. the site looked suspect and i jumped to conclusions. anyway, no harm no foul.

hrm, this is a touchy situation that’s bound to arise as Unity sites and packages start to proliferate. Sharing is good and all that, but specifically, how should we regard assets uploaded to the forum? When clear copyright indications are lacking, should we treat any package or resource uploaded to the forums as free to use? Or perhaps under an appropriate cc license? Because I have this friend, you know, to whom this might apply (cough).

you can use anything I’VE ever uploaded for any purpose you want with no strings attached. if clear copyright info is missing, you should ask the author. most of the stuff posted on the forum probably falls under public domain (the wiki certainly does) but still it’s probably best to get permission.

and for the record, i didn’t blame or accuse anyone. i just questioned whether it was legit. perhaps i could have phrased it better…

I came here late and would appreciate if the original post could be re-posted ? I would like to know what is being discussed and the answers are making it hard to figure out the question.

JW

lol - i guess you’re right joachim i did jump the gun a bit, apologies to whom it may concern ; )

i’m still wondering did you happen to find out if garen is involved pete?

PS any packages, scripts or project folders i post are free to use however you want unless i mention something specific about it ; )

sorry jw but at this point let’s just let sleeping dogs lie. something looked fishy but it wasn’t.

drJ - no i didn’t but i think they’re just using the demo scene as an example (legally as Unity licensees).

You’ve made all of us who weren’t quick enough wonder who you’re talking about. :frowning:

I just saw this and I’m not involved, but I guess I kind of am indirectly. No worries.

Thanks for looking out for me.

hey we got your back!
