Gears of War and Unreal III coming to mac, natively?

I think we can stop complaining about the mac never getting any big ticket games now.

Are these native ports, or Cedega binary conversions?

The TUAW write-up doesn’t say and I didn’t bother reading all the comment chatter. Either way this is interesting news…

No matter what version this will be, it will enforce you having an up to date gfx card unless you want to reduces all the nice stuff.

Hmmm, my extremely tech and gaming news savy brother told me that it was entirely cross platform and mac native, and that you would be able to play on live with the PC and mac versions of these games. But now I can’t really find anything on the interwebs with details on this.

I guess we will find out soon enough.

From what I’ve heard, but I am at work so I don’t have time to look it up, they said in a interview that it wasn’t based on Cedega, it was native.

Haven’t heard anything about Live though.

Ryan Gordon’s page says both games are native ports (linky).

Where is my halflife 2 I want to play gary’s mod :frowning:

Unreal and Gears of War are both engines licensed to third parties (for >$500,000 per game) … so there’s a big incentive for them to be highly portable.

all the other unreals all have mac versions, so im not surprised about that, although its great news cause i love those games

but gears of war is a big deal, i wouldn’t have guessed that,

bill gates must be piiiiissssseeeedddd

i read some where that unity use’s the same physics engine as gears of war, is that true??

That is true. The Unreal 3 Engine, used in UT3, Gears, and other upcoming titles, implements the Aegia PhysX engine, which is what Unity has.

Big-name games about to come out for Mac:

UT3
Gears
Battlefield: 2142
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Need For Speed: Carbon
A bunch of other stuff from Electronic Arts (including some simultaneous-release sports titles)

Plus Id’s new engine will clearly support Mac since that’s where it was first shown. And we already had the major games from Id’s current engine: Doom 3, Quake 4, and Prey.

Throw in WoW, lots of Sims and RTS stuff, Lego Star Wars, Myst Online, etc. etc., and tons of shareware of all kinds, and Mac gaming is not looking too shabby these days.

Id, Epic, EA, and Blizzard are all nice to have on board with Macs!

thats really cool, ill feel special when I brag about that to people

Starcraft2 will also be available for Mac and PC.
