General question about learning Unity

Hi,

I would like to know where to get the best Unity Tutorials so I can increase my Unity knowledge.

PS: The game I’m making is kind of a Worms, in 2.5D, think of it like a OMG Pirates from Mika Mobile.

Thank you.

My favourite site for learning Unity is www.unity3dstudent.com

And there are some excellent basic tutorials to get started for scripting. Either way you will need to be able to do some basic scripting. You should be able to get by with using other people’s scripts and modifying them slightly.

Thanks for the link.

I’ve been also looking at some books that are available at Amazon. Any recommendations?

+999 I love this site! It gets you thinking, and well, that’s what you have to do to script!

Programming is pretty damn daunting at first, but you’ll eventually realize there isn’t a whole lot to it (and there is a point where you begin to understand it by yourself)
If you have messenger I can try to help you, though I’ve never taught anyone before and you’d mostly have to ask the questions. PM me if you want to.

Thank you… a lot.
I think that first I will try to get familiar with the environment, then I’ll do the provided tutorials along with some reading of some books that I’ve downloaded. If after trying to understand Unity and Java by my self I still feel kind of lost, I will surely take your help, but asking you right know wont get me anyware 'couse all I have right now are doubts. I’ll rather ask you when I have a “real” question

I’m sending you a PM right now with my MSN address so we can stay in touch.

Thank you all

I used to buy lots of books on software etc.
I have found video tutorials to be a lot easier to follow and understand what the instructor is saying.
Besides books cost money, my suggestion is to find as many video tutorials as you can and go with those. There are also some excellent video tutorials that can be purchased, I’d still recommend these over a book, since Unity is very ‘visual’

If I had to recommend a book, I’d be the first to recommend Will Goldstones book, since he was kind enough to make the tutorials at www.unity3dstudent.com.
There is a link to his book on the bottom right page of his site.

Unity Game Development Essentials is a great book to start you off. It takes you step by step through the process in making a very simple game, and has things you can always come back to if you ever leave for too long, or just need a refresher.

So, after “googling” about Unity3D tutorials, books, seminars, etc, I’ve ended up on Design3 site, where I found everything I could ask. After watching a few videos, I saw that you needed to subscribe and, oh, surprise!, It’s paid. I thought it was going to cost me an eye or an arm, but actually it ended up costing just $99.9 for 6 months of complete access. More than I need to view all the videos. (there’s also a $9.99 fee for just one month!) I think that most of you are already aware of this site, 'couse there’s also a press release by Unity about this partnership, but like nobody mention me the site, I thought that maybe I could help someone my throwing it here.

Also, there are two books that are helping me a lot.

Unity3D Game Development by Example
Unity Game Development Essentials (Thanks killer1390 for the recommendation!!)

So, right now I’ve found another issue. In order to develop an iOS app I need a f…antastic Mac. So, I’ll see what can I do about this in the next days. Thing is, I’ve already have a pretty decent PC and I don’t want a freaking Mac  Someone told me that I can make Leopard run on my PC, but It seems like a rather nasty procedure. I’ll let you know how I manage this situation later on.

Thanks again

Its not nearly as nasty if you have Intel hardware. If you have AMD, well… Don’t bother.

Everyone rants about macs when they don’t own one or use it for an extended period of time. Thats their loss.

I think you misunderstood what the person was saying. He was referring to the fact that it is retarded to have to own a specific type of computer to develop for a specific platform.

Yeah, actually, I think that you should be able to develop an iOS app from a windows based PC just as well as with a Linux or with whatever system you may choose.

My actual system is an “old” Phenom 9650 X4 with 8GB of ram and a rather crappy GeForce 9600 1GB. It has been with me for 4 years now and I dont really feel like changing it or getting another one.

I’ve been also looking at this iATKOS thing and it seems that it works on PCs with AMD based processors. Time will tell I think

If you try it, please tell me how it goes. I am most interested.

Sure, give me a day or two and I’ll tell you how it worked.

Thank man.

So… iATKOS V7.1 installed like a charm. It’s running on a 80GB partition of my master 500HDD with absolutely no problems.

It’s running on this PC:

AMD Phenom X3 X720
4 GB RAM DDR2
Mother MSI K9A2VM V2
WD Caviar 500GB
More than just generic DVD recorder
Onboard sound
Onboard video

Also, the GeForce 9500 seems to work just fine.

I also have another dist. called iDeneb. This one seems more adequate for AMD based processors.
Now that I know that is not going to f… up my system, I’m going to install it iDeneb to see witch one is best and then I’ll try it on my (now called) “Dev PC”

Just like before, once I have it running and with no problems, I’ll let you know

Cool man. I will have to try this out soon.

So?. Have you tried? I kinda want to know which dist. you successfully installed and your hardware specs.

That is absolutely terrible of me. Not remembering to reply.

I tried iAtkos, to no avail. I looked into it further, and got a retail snow leopard disc, and used Modcd to boot. The results you ask? Well, I am typing this in snow leopard with my 1920x1080 resolution like normal… Yea, it worked. Now I just need to figure out how to update to 10.6.7 and still have it work.
