I wanted to play around a bit on some little side project and was wondering if anyone could help me figuring out how the Sphere in Geometry wars 3 was done.

Geometry Wars 3 - Evo Sphere - 145kk - Hardcore

Specifically I am interested in setting the sphere together (beginning of the level), having a sphere made out of squares and showing a grid (less interested in the grid joint animation).

Can this be somehow achieved via scripting, or is it all pure shaders and if so can it be done using shadergraph or is this all based on geometry shaders which require shader coding?
