I tried the following:
Installing npm, node, monodevelop manually
rm -rf ~/.local/share/unity3d ~/.cache/unity3d ~/.config/unity3d
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/unity3d/Packages
mkdir -p ~/.data/unity3d/Unity
This did not fix the issue.
My log looks like this:
$ cat ~/.config/unity3d/Editor.log

Initialize mono

Description: package manager for Node.js
Node.js is an event-based server-side javascript engine.
.
npm is the package manager for the Node JavaScript platform. It puts
modules in place so that node can find them, and manages dependency
conflicts intelligently.
.
It is extremely configurable to support a wide variety of use cases.
Most commonly, it is used to publish, discover, install, and develop
node programs.
