I have had a look around the web and most threads I find about this are out of date. Does anyone know of any good free software? Maybe something like FRAPS? I want to capture some videos of my game I’m working on.
Thanks in advance.
FRAPS does both. :).
Yeah I know but I’m looking for free software.
CamStudio: http://camstudio.org/
It does both, but I haven’t had much luck getting nice frame rates with it. But hey it’s free, so why not try it out for yourself? I never did spend much time with it.
Ah whoops. I guess I should have stated at the start what programs I’ve tried, Camstudio is one of those. I managed to get a pretty good frame rate out of it but the whole screen was covered in feedback.
Another I’ve tried is WeGame, but for some reason it wouldn’t let me look in a 360 view on my game and over that there was no mic support so I gave up.
zd soft is the one I liked the most. It’s not free, but you have a free trial.
I think the feedback you are referring to is due to CamStudios older codecs. All the codecs included are from the 90’s. I went to options->video options-> Set quality to 100. Then go to Configure and change Temporal Quality ratio up to 1.0. I also went to Options-program options-> Recording Thread Priority and set that to “above normal” and I obtained nicer framerates. Although that decreases Unities framerates. Seems like a C2D 2.13Ghz processor is not enough for CamStudio2.0. Perhaps the new version when its out of beta will be better. It created a decent video equivalent to low quality youtube videos.
WeGame is without a doubt the best capturing software I have ever used. Better than anything, even Fraps.
Yeah WeGame captures at an awesome framerate, I’m pissed off it won’t let me use the mouse while capturing though.
Looks like I’m going to have to use CamStudio after all, unless anyone else knows of a good free software?
In one of the Unite 2010 videos one of the panel members mentions Jing, its free and from what I’ve quickly tested would allow you to fully use your comp while capturing a particular area/window. I know it has a 5 minute cut off though so not sure if its still applicable. It has some really nice collaboration features as its tied into their online storage service but it might be worth looking into.
Jing is great, but doesn’t capture audio afaik. Only if you use a mic.
If you have a mac you can use quicktime player…
Five minutes might be fine anyway, and I plan on using a mic. So this could work out okay.
I have found some interesting hardware solutions if you have multiple pcs. I started looking into this idea as I noticed my framerates are cut in half using FRAPS or CamStudio. Since I have a desktop and laptop I might just output the video of one of my monitors to a video input recorder to get both video and sound. The cheapest solution I found was for 25$ on Newegg: Not Found: 404 Error (This product may not be available in your area, although it seems to be purchasable from many other online shops as well) This specific device takes standard RCA signal (Red/Yellow/White) and S-Video signals.
If you have two machines, a hardware solution would be the best as then you would have no performance degradation in game that you would have while running the video capture software. I will probably purchase one of these in the near future.
I would love one of those, but unfortunately I’m low on cash and only have one computer lol.
I can do pretty much the same thing with my DVD Recorder, but I have no idea how I would hook that up to my PC.
Jing Pro is only $15 a year, it that is an option, an offers some incentives like better compression and recording rate, if I remember correctly.
You can download a 30 day working version of Techsmith’s Camtasia Studio and give that a whirl, which is what I use.
Not sure how the frame rate will compare to the others you’ve tried.
You could also download a thirty day trial of Adobe’s Captivate, which I’ve never used.
