Good PC requirements

Hi all,

I help run a charity funded college in the UK where students can choose what they wish to learn. We have a large number of them learning programming currently, with at least 4 working on Unity.

We have recently been awarded a grant to buy some new equipment, so I am replacing the PC’s which we have been in desperate need of updating.

I have looked towards the gaming spec PC’s, but has anyone got any recommendations on what to go with to run Unity comfortably. I am aiming to not exceed £450 per unit.

Many thanks

I think £450 is unrealistic. What I would recommend for a “good” low budget Unity workstation would be:

Ryzen 5 2600
16GB RAM
512 GB M.2 NVME SSD
GTX 1650 Super

But the above is going to exceed your cost limit per unit. You go much lower with the specs though, and you’re going to run into fairly suboptimal performance (no longer qualifying for “good”), though performance is also dependent on the specific projects being worked on.

Without monitor, keyboard, and mouse, I come up with around £550 per unit. You can probably shave a little more off waiting for sales, or searching for the best prices, but a basic idea. Probably another £100 for basic peripherals per unit. So around £650 or so all said and done.

edit: wrong link and price, here’s the right one

You won’t be able to buy new gaming hardware with that budget without a major sacrifice like no graphics cards, and even then it will be a struggle to build one that will have acceptable performance in every other area.
