Good sources for free models?

I know there is turbo squid, but are there other sites besides there and the asset store?

If you search the web for “Free 3d models” you will find tons of results. If you want something specific you could try archive3d or the3dstudio.

Stick with the free ones for now.

I second BlendSwap.

Ive never seen Blendswap before. I just saw a model on their rotator that violates US IP laws (a Babylon 5 star fury, even called Ivanova’s Fury).

Sketchup warehouse as well. They’ll need heavy cleanup to lower those polycounts and make it better game topology, but you should find nearly everything you want on there for free.

Blend swap is definitely a good bet.

@Lynn_Fredricks I don’t live in the US so I’m unaware of the IP/Copyright practices, but all models on there which replicate something else are labelled as fan-art and have a strict non-commercial (etc) licence. Again, I don’t know about your laws but I can’t see how you could forbid someone from recreating a ship just out of their own enjoyment, which is purely for non-commercial, personal projects? Is it really that strict?

It’s not tweedie, unless you use those models in any projects that make money. It all depends on the copyright holder to be honest, some creators are extremely strict and will sue anybody left and right that uses any of their IP for anything, but others are really lax and won’t go for it unless there’s some money being made on their IPs by someone other than them.

Thanks Autarkis, that’s how I thought it was. I couldn’t see how Blendswap (which I believe is US based) would knowingly allow content to be uploaded that breached IP laws. I think if that was the case they’d have found a way to stop it from being uploaded very quickly.

Thanks. I will have to spend some time on blendswap.

To be honest I find the model in your avatar to be original and interesting. Why not create your own look around that style?

I will be trying to, but I am hoping to try and spend less time finishing the current game lol. Started this game as a project that I just wanted to finish and I am starting to get antsy lol. Need to get done.

All the free sites seem to have things that violate copyright laws in many countries. You have to be very, very careful when using models from them as some of the uploaders do not care about those laws.

You have to be careful even with models you buy through legitimate online stores as well. Even though some claim that they test models, they don’t necessarily test the legitimacy of them. They also do not necessarily go through their back catalogs. One well known one I found various Marvel and DC characters on.

Also, they don’t necessarily drop vendors after they’ve removed content for DMCA violations. One such well known brokerage site had a vendor who copied one made by our 3d model group - our most famous character. After we hit them with a notice, they pulled the model but the vendor was kept selling there - contrary to their own policy.

All I can say is that its complicated, and I am not a lawyer. I run into this sort of thing a lot though and serve out my share of legal notices.

Some works covered under copyright may extend across multiple countries (and most of Europe) by way of the Berne Convention.

Labeling something as fan-art and non-commercial doesn’t mean that the original copyright holder has authorized that, or that you are protected. Some companies are pretty cool about that, but others are not. Fan art is also more complicated when it comes to 3D. It used to be that fans would make and distribute 2D images only, back in the early days of the Internet. Distributing a 3D model of something that enables any number of fans to make art isn’t the same thing. But again, some companies appear to be fine with it, and don’t necessarily go after sites that distribute fan meshes.

But what they are most likely not cool about are embedding a 3D model of their IP into a game. Also they are not cool about people who pass something off as their own original work, or create some sort of sub-license.

When it comes to free sites too there’s also the issue if they are commercial or not. For example, if they charge a membership fee that supposedly pays for bandwidth, or worse, they generate revenue from ads, then they are hardly a non-commercial organization. They are making money off of someone elses work, and that’s not very different from a number of warez sites that generate revenue off of pirated stuff by running ads.
