Good texture mapping tutorial?

Lately I’ve been making a Unity game with a friend. I’m the programmer, he’s the artist… unfortunately, I only taught him Blender a few weeks before we started.

His modelling skills are competent, but his textures are… well, not. When he doesn’t bake on Vertex Paint, his texture maps look like they were made in Microsoft Paint. I was wondering if there was a good tutorial to get him started on making good looking texture maps for 3D models.

His tool of choice is Paint.NET, though he could probably be persuaded to use GIMP.

If the vertex paint jobs are so good, why not just use a shader that displays vertex colors, and then you won’t have to use any textures at all!?

I have done some, they are simple but for Photoshop.

Except they’re not good  I see I phrased that kind of awkwardly, but basically Vertex Paint and Microsoft Paint are his only options… neither of which look particularly good for our game.
