I’ve been searching for a good beginners tutorial on these subjects, but am finding too much. Any suggestions for a programmer who just want to learn the very basics of modeling a low poly cartoonish and animated character in 3ds max?

Characters (even cartoonish ones) are not good first-timers for a beginner. Correctly modeling and rigging a character takes some time to master and depend on various other skills.
I recommend you start small (like everyone else) with basic box-modeling, basic unwrapping and texturing tutorials. When you’ve got those down (and not just 2 tutorials but actual practice) you can take a whack at basic rigging and so on and so forth.
Baby steps should be your motto. :roll:
